❯ Description

The Green Giant cedar is a fast-growing tree that works great as a hedge or as a single specimen. Common applications for this tree include hedging and roadside plantings. Sometimes you will see this tree planted around parking lots as a buffer. The Green Giant is slightly larger and slightly faster-growing than the Excelsa cedar. In spring, new growth emerges a lighter green.

These trees are called giant for a reason. They will grow to a mature height of 50 ft  with a base of 12-18 ft. Annual pruning is recommended to allow the tree to take the shape that best suits your needs. The Green Giant tolerates a wide range of soils including clay, loamy, sandy or acidic soils. Good drainage and plenty of sun exposure will help your Giant Green cedar thrive.

Be sure to check out and 'like' our Facebook Site, Rogers Nursery and Earthworks. Green Giant Arborvitae grows to about 20-35' tall and about 10-15' wide. It grows at a rate of 24" per year (or more, especially during the first few years) depending on the care it receives. The habit is tall and conical. The foliage is green in the Summer and younger plants will get a hint of a bronze hue in the Winter. Pruning is never needed. To do well it needs partial to full sun. Does very well in sandy soils. Excels as a specimen plant, or a row of them makes a terrific privacy screen. Hardy in Zones 5-8. These are very young plants, only about 12" tall right now (see the last photo). They will be shipped out of the pot with the root mass kept moist and protected. We recommend that you pot these up for a while before planting them in the ground. WE WILL COMBINE SHIPPING COSTS IF YOU ORDER MORE THAN ONE ITEM. Our Nursery is State Licensed and Inspected.

Growing and Maintenance Tips:

Ideal for a fast-growing, tall screening or hedge. Like most cedars, it will take heavy pruning to create a dense, formal hedge. Once it is established, it is quite drought tolerant and more deer resistant than most cedars. This cultivar stands up better to snow and ice accumulation during the winter months.

Additional Notes about Green Giant Cedar:

'Green Giant' is a fast-growing, cedar cultivar (T. plicata x T. standishii) which was received from D.T. Poulsen, Denmark in 1967 and planted at the U.S. National Arboretum.

What is the difference between a Thuja and a Green Giant?

Thuja plicata or Western Red Cedar is cold hardy, maintains a nice green color in winter, and is deer resistant. Green Giant – Though 'Green Giant' has all the features of Western Red Cedar, it is actually a cross of T. plicata x T.

How long does it take a Thuja Green Giant to grow?

Attributes. This tree: Will grow up to 3' per year until maturity.

Can you plant Thuja Green Giant in winter?

You can plant any time of the year, but the best time for planting a new tree is in spring, before it gets too hot, while still allowing a whole growing season before winter to establish a strong root system. Newly planted green Thujas will need plenty of water the first growing season to establish strong roots.

How far from a fence should I plant a Thuja Green Giant?

If your screen or hedge is against a building, plant 6 feet from the wall, to protect the foundations. If you are planting against a fence, plant 3 feet from the fence so that the lower part of the plants remains bushy and the hedge remains on your side of the property line.
