Steuben County to hold property tax auction Friday

Steuben County, NY (WHCU) – A property tax auction’s taking place in Steuben County Friday.

The area’s held the event for parcels seized over back taxes across the span of several decades. More than 100 will be available for bid at the Campbell-Savona High School according to WENY. Several properties are located in Corning, Addison, Savona and Bath.

Officials say multiple spots have open cases with the DEC for ongoing cleanup.

Sheriff Sale Rules

  1. Sale is held in the lobby of the jail in the Sheriff’s Office.

  2. Sale begins at 11:00 am, local time.

  3. All sales are final.

  4. Property is sold AS IS…BUYER BEWARE.

  5. There are no warranties by the Sheriff or by SRI, Inc., including the commonly known address.

  6. IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO BID, you must present a SIGNED LETTER OF CREDIT to the SRI Representative on the day of the sale, before the sale begins. The letter must be on your LENDING INSTITUTE’S letterhead and must confirm you have sufficient funds available to make payment in full on the day of the sale.

  7. Payment must be made and payable to the Sheriff of Steuben County by 2:00 pm in certified funds on the day of sale. Failure to pay by 2:00 pm will result in your being responsible for damages and deficiencies pursuant to IC 32-29-7-9.

  8. You are not permitted to take a tour of the property. Stepping foot on the Sheriff Sale property is considered trespassing. Until a deed resulting from the sale is executed, the property still belongs to the defendant who is being foreclosed on.

  9. Purchaser is responsible for any unpaid taxes and/or liens on the property.

Overview
The office of treasurer is a constitutional office. The treasurer serves a four-year term with a two-term limit during any twelve year period. The County Treasurer is the custodian of all monies belonging to the county. Disbursements of monies with the proper orders issued and attested by the County Auditor.

The responsibilities include: Billing and the collection of property taxes (real estate-personal-mobile home); taxes involved in bankruptcy; collection of inheritance tax; innkeepers tax; issuance of tax clearances; mobile homes and alcoholic beverage permits; investment of funds; conducts annual real estate tax sale; the collection of delinquent property taxes and taxes in judgment; and search for and collection of delinquent taxes of public employees.

Property Tax due dates are May 10, 2022 and November 10, 2022!

Forms of payment accepted: Cash, Cashier Checks, Personal Checks and Money Orders.  Credit/Debit Cards are now accepted in the Treasurer's Office (2.5% fee), by phone (1-877-690-3729, 2.5% fee), and through the Internet at www.steuben.in.us or FORTE .  For your information, the Treasurer's Office receives none of the convenience fee.  The fee is collected by the vendor.  There is a minimum convenience fee for all transactions of $1.75.

If you mail in your payment make your check payable to Steuben County Treasurer and include all parcel numbers with your check.  Include a self addressed stamped envelope if you want a receipt. Postmark is accepted.

For your convenience there is a drop box located at the front of our building that you can drive up to.

General Information Mobile Home Permits:  Mobile home permits are available in our office. They are used for moving and/or transferring of title. Taxes have to be paid in full in cash before a permit can be issued.
Address Change Information: If you have a change in address please notify our Office or the Auditor's Office.
Payment Types: Tax payments may be made by personal check, money order, or cash for the amount due. Drop boxes are available at participating banks. Please check with the bank for any specific instructions and only drop off a personal check or money order. (No cash please)
