"Walking through To Kalon, admiring its contours and vines, smelling the richness of its soil, I knew this was a very special place. It exuded an indefinable quality I could not describe, a feeling that was almost mystical."

-- Robert Mondavi

Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world's finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.

Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley's finest vineyards, including Stag's Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).

Mr. Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. He also believed in combining the newest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions.

Our winemaking and vineyard teams are proud to carry on our founder's mandate to always strive higher, to pursue Robert Mondavi's goal of excellence with the same passion and innovative spirit, moving forward with programs that break barriers and open new frontiers.

WLeading this initiative is Genevieve Janssens, Director of Winemaking. Genevieve, whose relationship with the winery began in 1978, was selected Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in 2010.

We are located at 7801 St. Helena Highway in the town of Oakville at the edge of the To Kalon Vineyard.

The town of Woodbridge is nestled between the Sacramento River Delta and the Sierra Nevada Foothills, surrounded by acres of grapevines. The gnarled old vines you pass along the roads to the winery speak to the history of the Lodi area. Lured by the abundant sunshine that ripened grapes for wine, many Italian immigrants came here in the 1800s. Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, of Sassoferrato, Italy, first immigrated to Minnesota but soon traveled west to settle their family in Lodi, where Robert, his brother, and two sisters grew up among these vineyards. Robert established the Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley in 1966. Looking for a place to produce quality wine for people to enjoy with every meal, he returned to Lodi. In 1979 he acquired the Cherokee Wine Association, established by several Lodi grape growers as a cooperative for producing wine after the repeal of Prohibition. He renamed the property Woodbridge Winery. Today, Woodbridge remains one of a few surviving wineries in the Lodi area that began as a cooperative. In 1979, Woodbridge Winery became the first in the region to convert to single-label wine production with Robert Mondavi red and white wines, affectionately known as Bob Red and Bob White. In 1985 the winery pioneered the gentle, direct-to-press operation for white wines, now practiced industry-wide. In 1986, Woodbridge became the first winery in the popular premium category to produce and vintage date varietally-labeled wines, highly regarded for their complex flavor and character.

Covering the most vine acreage in the state compared to any other red wine variety, Cabernet Sauvignon produces as much wine in California as Merlot and Pinot Noir combined. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates, as well as the freedom of its winemakers, allow for an incredible range of wine styles from this single grape.

California’s most famous region—and especially for Cabernet Sauvignon—is the acclaimed Napa Valley. While Cabernet is successful throughout the world, rarely has it achieved such merit as it does from the Napa Valley. At this point the two are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other.

Napa’s closest neighbor, Sonoma County, does an impressive job keeping up with Napa’s fame and glory. Alexander Valley, Sonoma Mountain, Moon Mountain and Knights Valley contribute to the lot of some of California’s top-rated Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lake County in California’s North Coast has become a focus for some of Napa’s more respected growers. From the Central Coast come iconic examples of classic California Cabernet; Lodi and the Sierra Foothills are great budget-friendly sources of amicable Cabernets.
