In 2004, the trend of wild concepts on the AM90 began with Dave’s Quality Meats (DQM) who developed an Air Max 90 based on bacon.

2008, 2010 and 2015 saw successful retro releases of the AM90, identical to the original with only very small exceptions.

Then, in 2017, Virgil Abloh and his brand Off-White pushed the Air Max 90 in a new direction by giving the model a reconstructed look, laying bare the ‘guts’ of the shoe. Part of ‘The Ten’ drop, it was insanely popular and sold out immediately.

For the model’s 30th anniversary in 2020, Nike recrafted the design to resemble the original profile more closely, slimming it down by tweaking the panels, toe box and heel.

The Essential edition hits the refresh button to give the Air Max 90 a new feel 30 years on.

Evolving and adapting, the Air Max 90 Essential Moire puts the OG sneak through a redesign to push performance further and craft out a fresh look from a classic style. Like the Ultra, this edition has a streamlined look and lightweight feel, while also featuring a perforated upper for increased breathability. With an exaggerated outsole for increased grip, the Ultra Moire shows that small changes make a big difference.

Nike Air Max 90 EZ

Adapting to modern trends, the Air Max 90 EZ switches up the solid, layered design of the OG in favour of a soft and breathable mesh upper. Keeping everything that worked with the original, the EZ brings the Air Max 90 firmly into the 21st century – transferring the sneaks appeal to a new generation of sneakerheads.

Nike has served its Air Max 90 in a crisp new monochromatic colorway. While the model is a slightly modernized take on its boxier OG counterpart, it still manages to faithfully retain major elements of the silhouette’s retro design that debuted nearly 30 years ago, like its stain tongue tag and thick rubber overlays.

Most of the shoe is dressed in white and accented with small hits of black. Apart from the aforementioned satin application, the shoe boasts a mix of finely textured materials like mesh and horizontally-debossed rubber. “Nike Air” branding is placed at the heel counter, complemented by black rubber eyelet panels along the upper quarters and forefoot. A skinny black Swoosh appears at the sidewalls over a bed of smooth white full-grain leather, while a tonal midsole with a transparent Air sole unit rounds off the clean look.
