Setting the mood for romance means engaging all the senses. Or, it at least means finding a way to cover up whatever cloying perfume your roommate uses. That's where essential oils come in handy. Not only do they fill the bedroom with a luxurious fragrance, certain types are believed to imbue it with romantic energy. Talk about setting the mood.

According to holistic health practitioners and aromatherapy experts, essential oils (and their accompanying scents) have specific properties that are believed to affect your emotions and frame of mind. That's why you probably associate lavender with tranquility and a good night's sleep or citrus with happiness and a boost in energy.

When it comes to striking a specifically sexy chord, heady scents like patchouli, vetiver, or sandalwood are known for having sensual connotations. If you're new to using essential oils but want to bring them into the bedroom, start with these three. Or, if you and your partner connect certain smells to your relationship, seek those out while shopping for essential oils — after all, scents can be powerful memory triggers.

Of course, before you use an essential oil in any setting (sexy or otherwise), you should make sure you don't have a sensitivity or a flat-out allergy to it. Do a spot test and use a carrier oil (such as coconut oil or jojoba oil) if you want to use essential oils on your skin. Consult the FDA's list of approved varieties before adding any essential oils to foods or drinks.

Regardless of how you use them, it's never a bad idea to talk to your doctor before dabbling in essential oils. This is especially true for pregnant people, as certain oils can be hazardous depending on your trimester.

Read on to learn more about how you should use essential oils in the bedroom.

Essential oils are believed by many to have the ability to purify and strengthen human energy fields. And some even believe that certain essential oils can align your aura with the energy of love. Intriguing, right?

Now, skeptics will say that this can be explained by the fact that the aroma of essential oils, when reaching the brain via the olfactory organs, can affect the pituitary gland and make you feel happier, more relaxed, calmer and even… in love.

So, do essential oils really attract love?

Aphrodisiac essential oils positively impact relationships by boosting libido and stimulating passion. They also have a calming effect and they can make you feel better about yourself and less self-aware (which, in the context of sexual experiences, is, most of the times, a good thing). These oils help create a sense of connection between partners and they can help increase closeness, intimacy and affection.

What essential oils are good for attracting love

There are several essential oils you can use to help increase intimacy in your relationship. These are my top 5 recommendations:

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
is one of the most popular essential oils for love and

romance. It has a sweet floral aroma with a powerful relaxing effect and, as most exotic fragrances, it can help reduce stress and anxiety. Traditionally, in Indonesia, the petals of the ylang-ylang flower are scattered on the beds of newlyweds.

You can pair Ylang Ylang with any citrus essential oil to enhance its benefits. My personal favorite: a combination of three drops of ylang-ylang, three drops of sweet orange essential oil, and two drops of Clary sage. Put the blend into an electric diffuser and let it do its thing.

Jasmine Essential Oil

Jasmine Essential Oil has a floral, exotic and warm fragrance and it has been used for centuries for attraction and romance. You can use a few drops of Jasmine essential oil diluted with olive oil to give your partner a massage that will get the passion ignited. The scent is also believed to balance female energies.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli Essential Oil
is believed to help rekindle desire and it has been used as an aphrodisiac for decades. It can also help relax your body before bedtime. For best results, I would recommend combining a few drops of patchouli essential oil with a couple of drops of rose essential oil. Speaking of which…

Rose Otto Essential Oil

Rose Otto Essential Oil
has a signature floral fragrance that brings about feelings of love and comfort, helping create an environment that fosters intimacy. You can blend rose essential oil with sandalwood and ylang-ylang to create a seductive and calming fragrance.

Sheer Bliss Essential Oil

Sheer Bliss Essential Oil Blend
can help create a gentle aura of pleasant joy all around you. Its fresh, citrusy scent instantly transports your mind to sunny days, lush green valleys carpeted with beautiful flowers and ripe orchards. When you breathe in the soothing fragrance, gloom seems to vanish, and calming serenity takes its place.

How do you make a love potion with essential oils?

I’m not sure I believe in love potions, and probably neither do you. However, you can certainly combine the love-and-passion-inducing essential oils we’ve already talked about to create blends that have a similar effect – they make one feel more relaxed, cheerful, and ready to embrace love. You can diffuse them, put them on wearable diffusers, add them to a warm bath (properly diluted in a carrier oil) or use them to create a signature perfume.

Here is a blend for love, which I absolutely, well, love:

  • 15 drops of lavender
  • 10 drops of rose otto
  • 10 drops of jasmine
  • 10 drops of Ylang Ylang
  • 10 drops of cinnamon
  • 50 drops of wild orange
  • 40 drops of Myrrh

Put all the essential oils in an amber glass dropper bottle. Screw the cap tightly and shake the bottle so that all the oils are mixed evenly. That’s it!

I had to try to answer this question, just because I hear it so often!

If the lack of sexual desire is caused by stress, anxiety or tiredness, then essential oils can definitely help. Diffuse some jasmine, patchouli or Ylang Ylang to help your partner relax and rekindle its passion. And while you’re at it, you’ll get a nice little passion boost yourself!

Which essential oil is seductive?

To make the experience even sexier, Lu recommends using jasmine essential oil on the body. "Known for its warming, seductive, and sweet aroma, jasmine is mildly euphoric and has a balancing effect on the nervous system," she says.

What scent is good for love making?

Aphrodisiac scents include pumpkin, lavender, vanilla, cinnamon, peppermint, and ginger. Despite some skepticism around the use of aphrodisiacs, studies show that many of these aromas do work — they can be easily incorporated into anyone's fragrance routine.
