Sometimes a perfume bottle is so pretty you will try and force yourself to like the fragrance inside. It’s happened to me before: A chic brand launches an equally chic new perfume that I know would look gorgeous on my vanity. I spritz it, dislike it for some reason (too sweet, too musky, too hipster, too much like something my grandma would wear), but I try to grin and bear it for a couple of days for the sake of home decor. That is, until I finally can’t stand the smell of myself and am forced to give up my ill-fated attempt. This was what I thought might be the case with Yves Saint Laurent’s Mon Paris eau de toilette. The flacon — with its playful polka-dotted mesh bow tied around its neck and delicate pink juice inside —was so gorgeous, so elegant, that I was expecting to get my hopes dashed. Luckily, that so was not the case. Show In fact, I’d even like the smell of Mon Paris if the bottle looked like crap. The eau de toilette combines fruity, citrusy notes like grapefruit, raspberry, pear, and orange blossom with heady, sensual notes you’d expect to find in a fragrance inspired by Paris, including patchouli and musk. This makes Mon Paris a warm, citrusy scent, which sounds like an oxymoron but smells fresh yet sexy, with the perfect amount of sweetness and spice thrown into the mix. To be honest, I’ve worn the same perfume — Tocca Colette — for four years now, and I loved it so much, I felt no need to replace it. I honestly thought I’d be wearing it for the rest of my life. But after a week of testing Mon Paris for our annual Best of Beauty Awards, I was shocked that I'd found a new scent I liked just as much, if not better, for all the reasons I mentioned above. This time an outwardly beautiful scent turned out to be just as beautiful on my skin; making its way onto my vanity — and staying there for good.
