Admission to USF is more competitive than ever, but the process of applying is not difficult. Unless otherwise noted, our transfer requirements and deadlines are consistent across all three campuses: Tampa campus, St. Petersburg campus and Sarasota-Manatee campus.

Former Students Returning to USF

Please complete an application no later than 20 business days prior to the first day for your desired term of entry.

We recommend you regularly check the status of your application to ensure our office has received all required application materials. You will receive your decision by mail once a decision is rendered.

General Requirements for all Majors

The requirements stated below are standards for admission to USF. Please be aware that admission to the academic program may include additional requirements. For more information on admission to the academic program, visit the Undergraduate Catalog

Terminology

  • Lower-Level (LL) Transfer = 12-29 hours of transferable credit including in-progress
    • Must have some completed post-secondary work
  • Mid-Level (ML) Transfer = 30-59 hours of transferable credit including in-progress
  • Upper-Level (UL) Transfer = 60+ hours of transferable credit including in-progress

 Completion Ratio

All transfer students must have a courses completion ratio ≥ 67%. Completion ratio is the percentage of courses completed versus attempted

 Lower-Level (LL) Transfer

  • Transfer GPA ≥ 2.5
  • High School GPA ≥ 2.5
  • High School Units: 4 English, 4 Math, 3 Natural Science, 3 Social Science, 2 Foreign Language.
  • Final High School Transcript
  • Must submit official SAT/ACT scores
  • f HS GPA is ≥ 2.5 and < 3.0
    • SATR ≥ 24, SATWL ≥ 25, SATM ≥ 24, OR
    • ACTR ≥ 19, ACTE ≥ 17, ACTM ≥ 19
  • If HS GPA is ≥ 3.0
    • SATR ≥ 24, SATWL ≥ 25, SATM ≥ 24, OR
    • ACTR ≥ 19, ACTE ≥ 17, ACTM ≥ 19, OR
    • C or better in
      • college-level English Composition course and
      • college-level Math course

 Mid-Level (ML) Transfer

  • Transfer GPA ≥ 2.5
  • 2 years of foreign language in high school and/or 2 semesters at the collegiate level
  • Final High School Transcript
  • C or better in college-level English Composition course
  • C or better in college-level Math course

 Upper-Level (UL) Transfer

  • With an Associate of Arts (AA) from a Florida College System Institution
    • Transfer GPA ≥ 2.0
  • Without an Associate of Arts (AA) from a Florida College System Institution
    • Transfer GPA ≥ 2.3

Second Baccalaureate (SB) Transfer

  • Final University Transcript
  • With a USF Bachelors’ degree
    • Bachelors GPA ≥ 2.0
  • Without a USF Bachelors’ degree
    • Bachelors GPA ≥ 2.5

 Former USF Student Returning (FSR)

  • USF GPA ≥ 2.0
  • Overall GPA ≥ 2.0
  • In good standing and eligible to return to the last institution attended
  • Minimum GPA for the declared major, pre-requisites met if applicable

Nursing programs are limited-access. Transfer students meeting minimum criteria will be admitted to USF as Pre-nursing.  They must then submit a secondary application with the College of Nursing through NursingCAS.  Please visit the College of Nursing website for complete details.  

  • Second Bachelors Degree students applying for Spring admission submit an application to the Tampa campus but, if admitted to the Nursing program, take their courses at the Sarasota-Manatee campus
  • Second Bachelors Degree students applying for Fall admission submit an application to the Tampa campus but, if admitted to the Nursing program, take their courses at the St Petersburg campus

Foreign Language Entrance Requirement (FLENT)

Students must have completed two academic units of the same foreign language in high school or two semesters of the same foreign language or American Sign Language (ASL) in college to be considered for admission.  If you already have fulfilled this requirement, submit official transcripts showing the foreign language or ASL courses completed. Refer to the following bullets for methods to meet the requirement and possible exemptions.  Students who have not met FLENT at point of admission may still be admissible, but must meet FLENT before graduating from USF.

  • Two academic units (years) of the same foreign language or American sign language in high school (9th-12th grades), or one academic unit (year) at level 2.
  • Two passing semesters of the same foreign language (e.g., SPN 1120 and SPN 1121) or sign language in college, earning no less than eight credit hours.
  • Successfully passing the USF Language Placement Test by placing into the third course or higher, https://www.usf.edu/arts-sciences/departments/world-languages/language-placement-testing/index.aspx.
  • Passing College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Foreign Language subject test level 2, http://ugs.usf.edu/credit-by-exam/?page=exam&exam=CLEP
  • One year of an Advanced Placement (AP) foreign language course in high school

USF Does Not Require Essays or Personal Statements

No essay or personal statement is requested to be evaluated for admission to USF.  Any submission of an essay or personal statement will not be opened or reviewed

Is it hard to get into USF as a transfer student?

If you have graduated from high school and obtained 30-59 transferrable credits (including in-progress credits), USF considers you a mid-level transfer student. Students must have at least a C in both a college-level math course and a college-level English composition course. A 2.50 transfer GPA is required.
