New York-Presbyterian Hospital

New York-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) was formed in the 1998 merger of New York Hospital (affiliated with Cornell University) and Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. NYP has since become one of the largest comprehensive health care facilities in the world and the largest in New York. The hospital forms the centerpiece of a federation of top-quality hospitals, specialty institutes, and continuing care centers throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This provides an expanded referral system, which draws patients from throughout the tri-state area to its flagship academic medical centers. NYP has been named part of U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll for the Best Hospitals in the United States every year for over two decades.

The two main campuses of NYP are financially and administratively integrated, but the medical schools and general surgery residency programs remain independent institutions. Several faculty members and fellows hold joint appointments and teach at both centers. However, all activities in the Columbia General Surgery training program occur at facilities associated specifically with CUIMC.

Columbia University Irving Medical Center

The primary site of the residency, Columbia University Irving Medical Center is located on a 20-acre site in Upper Manhattan. Formerly Columbia-Presbyterian, this center was first established in 1928 as a joint project between Columbia University and the Presbyterian Hospital. It was one of the first academic medical centers to integrate clinical care, research and teaching at one campus. The campus now includes the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, The Mailman School of Public Health, Children's Hospital of New York, Milstein Hospital, The New York State Psychiatric Institute, as well as a number of institutes dedicated to clinical and basic science research.

Located in the heart of Washington Heights, a primarily Dominican neighborhood, CUIMC serves a local, largely uninsured population in addition to patients travelling to the hospital from the greater tri-state area. The opportunity to work with under-served patients is one of the great strengths of the residency program. Our surgical residents are often one of the first medical professionals to care for these patients, allowing them to participate in the diagnosis, treatment, and initial patient education for a variety of common medical illnesses.

As part of the complete general surgery training program, residents spend varying amounts of time at a number of hospitals outside of CUIMC. These include the Allen Hospital in Upper Manhattan; Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ; and University Hospital (affiliated with Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences) in Newark, NJ.
