Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 hasn't been confirmed yet by Netflix, but we might not have seen the last of Leatherface.

The new movie acts as a direct sequel to the horror classic and marks the ninth movie in the series that has a surprisingly complicated timeline. Like Halloween, you could view a potential sequel as Texas Chainsaw Massacre 6 (as it doesn't actively ignore the sequels) or Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3.

So just for the sake of ease, we'll call a potential sequel Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as the new movie effectively acts as soft reboot for the series. Whatever you want to call it though, it's a sequel that's certainly set up by the new movie's shocking ending.

Producer and co-writer Fede Álvarez is certainly up for a sequel if the movie is a hit on Netflix. "I would never want to be too specific. Any thoughts are kind of a spoiler. But I'm sure if there's a chance to make another one, we'll be ready," he told EW.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 potential release date: When can we expect Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2?

As we mentioned, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 has yet to be officially confirmed by Netflix, so we don't have a release date yet.

The first movie was originally set for a cinema release some time in 2021 before it was picked up by Netflix, arriving on February 18, 2022. If production on the sequel starts this year, it's possible we could see Leatherface return in February 2023.

It feels more likely that we'd have to wait until later in 2023 (perhaps around Halloween time) or to February 2024 for any potential sequel. Until it gets confirmed though, this is pure speculation for now.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre ending: How does it set up Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2?

After Leatherface chainsaws his way through several new victims, he's left with a final face-off against Sally Hardesty, the only survivor of the 1973 massacre, and sisters Lila and Melody.

Sally doesn't prove as much of a hassle as Laurie Strode does to Michael Myers and Leatherface quickly kills her. He's about to do the same to Lila when Melody saves her and together, the two kill Leatherface – or so they think.

Leatherface returns as Lila and Melody are making their way out of town and drags Melody out of the car, before decapitating her as Lila watches on, helpless. She continues on out of town, while Leatherface returns to his original home in a post-credits scene.

It feels like any potential sequel will pick up on Lila returning to seek revenge on Leatherface, especially as director David Blue Garcia has spoken of the decision to bring back Sally as a way to pass the torch to a new generation.

"We're trying to tell this story and keep the story alive for another generation. But they're still fans of the original out there, so many of us," he told CBR.

"It's a little bit of fan service in the sense that we get to see what happened to a beloved character, but it's also a way of introducing us to new protagonists that are going to continue the story into the future."

Could we see more links to the past in any potential sequel? After all, the new movie might not directly reference any Texas Chainsaw movie beyond the first movie, but it doesn't totally rewrite the canon like Halloween did.

"When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie — it's so wacky and of its time," Álvarez told EW.

"But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it's up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen."

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 cast: Who's coming back for Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2?

There's not many survivors left to return for a potential sequel after Leatherface continued his effective slaying ways with a new batch of victims.

Lila is the only one left alive of the main cast in the new movie, so we can expect Elsie Fisher to reprise her role if a sequel happens. After all, she's got the avenge the slaughter of her sister Melody.

Mark Burnham should also be back as Leatherface after the actor took over the role from Gunnar Hansen, who passed away in 2015.

Other than that though, it'll be a brand-new cast of people for Leatherface to torment in any possible sequel.
