Lotus berthelotii
“Parrot’s Beak”

Parrots beak plant for sale

Parrots beak plant for sale

Said to be extinct in its native Canary Islands, this rare and spectacular member of the Pea family captivates all who see it trailing over a “green roof” here at the nursery. Loaded with fiery 2” scarlet and gold “parrot beaks” over a long Spring to Fall season, the blooms are held upright and in bright contrast to the silvery-green needle-like trailing foliage. To 1’ tall and 2-3’ across, it’s gorgeous trailing over a wall or out of a container (5+ gal). Can be used as an exotic groundcover too, just make sure to provide excellent drainage and some fertility, and don’t let it dry out for best show. Evergreen, disease-free and deer resistant. Cut back by 1/3 to refresh if needed. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Easily grown as an annual.

Is Parrot's Beak an annual or perennial?

Native to the Canary and Cape Verde Islands, Lotus berthelotii (Parrot's Beak) is a trailing evergreen perennial with soft, silver-gray, needle-like leaves, spaced along the stems in attractive whorls. Hanging like delicate silver chains, they contrast sharply with pea-like, 1 in. long (2.5 cm), bright crimson flowers.

How do you grow a parrot's beak?

To encourage beautiful blooms, grow parrot's beak in full sun. Full sun also promotes better branching as well as intense silver foliage. In part shade, branching is much more sparse, and leaves will take on more of a greenish hue.

How do you propagate a parrot's beak?

Take cuttings 8 to 10 weeks prior to planting out (after all danger of frost has passed). Strip the foliage off the bottom 1 inch of cuttings and insert in a soil mix. Keep humidity high during rooting. Pinch tips to induce branching.

Can you grow parrots beak indoors?

Growing Parrot's Beak Indoors These gorgeous plants are often used for cut flower arrangements. However, these are also excellent container plants you can grow in your home or a garden. If you wish to grow it outdoors it is important to leave it in warm enough temperatures.
