How to clean the inside of a washing machine top loader

Your washing machine works hard. It removes dirt, stains and bacteria from all your clothes and doesn’t ask for much in return. Over time, dirt and soap scum build up. If you’ve never cleaned your washing machine, then a good scrubbing is overdue. Check out these tips for cleaning a top-loading or front-loading washing machine.

Best Way to Clean a Washing Machine

How to Clean the Outside of a Washing Machine

  1. Remove the control knobs if they come off, and wash them in the sink.
  2. Wipe down the exterior of the washing machine with a microfiber cloth and all-purpose cleaner.
  3. If you have someone to help you, scooch the machine away from the wall to vacuum behind it. Some machines have wheels on the back. Try tipping the front of the machine so the rear wheels contact the ground.
  4. Inspect the rubber water supply hoses for cracks or wear. If you see any damage, replace them to avoid a water leak and subsequent water damage.

How to Clean the Inside of a Washing Machine

  1. Remove any parts that you can take to the sink to clean, such as the soap tray.
  2. Use a cloth, a toothbrush and white vinegar to scrub the crevices inside the machine.
  3. Clean the smaller parts too. If you cannot remove the soap tray, fill it with vinegar and allow it to soak while you clean other areas of the machine. If your front-loading washing machine has a rubber gasket, use a cloth with vinegar to wipe it clean.
  4. Some washing machines have a trap to catch hair and debris. Look for it in the vertical agitator on top-loading machines, and then clean it with vinegar. Consult the owner’s manual if you’re not sure where it is or if your machine has one.
  5. Some front-loading washers may have a small door that catches coins, buttons and small debris. Look for any doors or ports that may provide access to this area for cleaning. Some washers are not equipped with this feature.

How to Clean and Sanitize the Wash Drum

Pour a quart of white vinegar into the wash drum with a cup of baking soda. Use a stiff nylon brush and vinegar to scrub the interior of the wash drum. At the hottest temperature setting, run a wash cycle with this cleaning solution in an empty washer; select the heavy-duty wash cycle if available.

Run your machine again with regular soap if you want to get rid of the vinegar smell.

Keep Your Washing Machine Clean

  • For high-efficiency (HE) machines, only use HE-approved detergent to eliminate excess suds.
  • Eyeballing the soap is easy but can be a waste. Always use a measuring cup!
  • For front-loading machines, keep the door cracked when not in use to prevent mold and mildew.
  • Clean the washer debris trap once a week.

How to clean the inside of a washing machine top loader

Why would anyone clean their washing machine? It’s supposed to clean itself, right?

Wrong.

Your top load washer needs a good deep cleaning here and there otherwise dirt and grime from your laundry builds up inside the washing machine. Don’t believe us? Take a look for yourself. You are bound to find soap scum and mineral deposit build-ups. Keep your Maytag laundry appliance cleaning efficiently by follow these tips!

Clean it out at least twice a year

When we say you need to clean your washing machine, we aren’t meaning every week or even every month. It’s your responsibility to know when you should clean it out, but we suggest pulling out the cleaning materials at least twice a year is a safe bet. If you live in an area where there is a lot of hard water flowing through your home’s pipes, you may want to start cleaning it out every three to four months.

Fill it up!

To begin the simple process, you are going to need to fill your washer up with hot water. Remember, we are specifically talking about cleaning your Maytag top load washer, which has different instructions from a front load washer. Make sure to leave it empty so you don’t ruin any clothing. Take some Chlorine-bleach, pour 1 quart into the water filled washer, and then let it agitate for 1 minute. Afterwards, just let it sit for one hour so it can soak. Finally, run the longest cycle you can from your washing machine settings without adding any detergent.

One more time!

You’re almost done! Fill up your washing machine with hot water, once more, but this time add 1 quart of white distilled vinegar to the mix. Vinegar is such an acidic substance that its power to counteract large build ups is very impressive. Run the same cycle you did with the bleach but take a moment to clean all the little nooks and crannies needing a good wash down.

Once you’ve deep cleaned your Maytag appliance, it will be all ready to take care of your next pile of dirty laundry.
