ABOUT THE BOOK:
The Lord of the Rings is an epic high-fantasy novel written by English author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling novels ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.

The title of the novel refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across Middle-earth, following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, most notably the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin.

Although generally known to readers as a trilogy, the work was initially intended by Tolkien to be one volume of a two-volume set, the other to be The Silmarillion, but this idea was dismissed by his publisher. For economic reasons, The Lord of the Rings was published in three volumes over the course of a year from 29 July 1954 to 20 October 1955. The three volumes were titled The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Structurally, the novel is divided internally into six books, two per volume, with several appendices of background material included at the end.

Three luxurious leather bound volumes that will bring you hours of entertainment. The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by the English philologist J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II. Although intended as a single-volume work, it was originally published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955, due to post-war paper shortages, and it is in this three-volume form that it is popularly known. It has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many different languages, becoming one of the most popular and influential works in 20th-century literature. Each volume contains the classic qualities you can expect from Easton Press: Premium Leather. Silk Moire Endleaves. Distinctive Cover Design. Hubbed Spine, Accented in Real 22KT Gold. Satin Ribbon Page Marker. Gilded Page Edges. Long-lasting, High Quality Acid-neutral Paper. Smyth-sewn Pages for Strength and Durability. Beautiful Illustrations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR. J.R.R. Tolkien (1892 - 1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, CBE was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. He served as the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Pembroke College, Oxford, from 1925 to 1945 and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature at Merton College, Oxford from 1945 to 1959. He was at one time a close friend of C. S. Lewis, they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings. Tolkien was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 March 1972. After his father's death, Tolkien's son Christopher published a series of works based on his father's extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion. These, together with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings form a connected body of tales, poems, fictional histories, invented languages, and literary essays about a fantasy world called Arda, and Middle-earth within it. Between 1951 and 1955, Tolkien applied the term legendarium to the larger part of these writings. While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature or, more precisely, of high fantasy. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". Forbes ranked him the 5th top-earning "dead celebrity" in 2009.

TOLKIEN CLASSICS The Hobbit The Fellowship of the Ring The Two Towers The Return of the King The Silmarillion Tolkien's epic fantasy comes alive in this five-volume set: The Hobbit, illustrated by Tolkien himself; The Lord of the Rings, with frontispiece art by acclaimed fantasy illustrator Michael Hague; and The Silmarillion, stories of Middle-earth. 6 x 9 Factory Sealed - Shrink Wrapped. . . . . . . . . I adore Tolkien and own many copies of his books. But this is the copy I keep next to my desk and look at daily. The set is simply gorgeous. The leather is high quality and thick. It's not just a thin veneer. The gold lettering shimmers in the light, as does the gilded edges of the pages. There's a lovely ribbon book-marker built into each book. They come with two-color maps that unfold so you can follow along with the voyages (or mount the map on the wall). Definitely one of those sets that will get treasured for decades and passed down. So there are several maps, and several of the books include a full-color painting in the first few pages to highlight the content. Well recommended for lovers of Tolkien. -- Lisa Shea.
