Do grocery stores sell liquor in california

Actual Northern California

Yes, in California.

Dedicated liquor stores are for variety, special orders, and convenience, since they're frequently located in areas where a grocery store wouldn't fit. A lot of small convenience stores are basically just liquor stores with a small section of junk food and a half-aisle of household/automotive goods tacked on, and lottery tickets & tobacco at the counter.

Big box stores like Walmart/Target and Costco, too. The Costco liquor aisles are where it’s at!

And to add, you can get alcohol from the gas station too.

Yes in some states, no in others

level 2

I am clearly living in the wrong state.

level 2

There’s a place by me that has drive thru for liquor also. I have no idea of the legality of that 😂

Missouri is fairly relaxed as well compared to some other states. This is on large part of the lobbying practices of a certain beer company in St. Louis.

I’d this throughout the state or just in the NOLA area?

NC by way of Massachusetts

Different states have different laws. North Carolina does not sell it in the grocery store, we have state-run liquor stores. Nevada, for example, has no such restrictions. It varies.

level 1

Yes. You can buy hard liquor, warm wine, warm cider, and warm beer in grocery stores in Indiana.

Liquor stores exist for two reasons in Indiana:

  1. The only place to buy cold beer is a liquor store. (Well, breweries as well, but only the beer the brewery brews.)

  2. Convenience. It’s much quicker to go into a liquor store than a grocery store. Also the selection at some liquor stores is much larger at liquor stores.

level 2

Why is the beer warm in grocery stores?

level 2

Doesn’t the grocery store also need a pharmacy to sell liquor? I think I remember that also being a weird quirk of Indiana alcohol laws.

level 1

Yes.

Liquor stores tend to have a larger selection, a better selection and/or they are convenience stores that sell a lot of alcohol.

Every state has different liquor laws.

I live in Pennsylvania where you can only buy hard liquor above a certain ABV percentage in state-controlled stores. It's a pain in the ass because those stores sell liquor and wine but not beer (or anything else, really.) You can buy beer and wine in some grocery stores here. And you can buy beer at "beer distributors" that only sell beer and sometimes low ABV spirits.

Where I grew up in Maryland you can buy any type of alcohol at a liquor store, they are private businesses there and not controlled by the government. There are a small number of grocery stores that can sell beer and wine but it's not common.

In NY State supermarkets can't sell hard liquor or wine, just beer or hard cider. If I want to buy hard liquor I have to go to a liquor store. It's very strange. If a supermarket wants to sell hard liquor they would have to open an adjacent store with a separate entrance just for that purpose.

level 1

Not in minnesota. In michigan you can.

level 1

Not in Oregon. I grew up mostly in CA and the liquor stores down there would also sell sweets, snacks, soft drinks, tobacco, etc. We also had stores like BevMo that sells all sorts of spirits, beer, wine.

level 1

Liquor laws of all kinds vary wildly by state, county, city, whatever, probably more so than any other kind of laws in the US. Some states it’s openly available right in the middle of the grocery store, others it has to be a separate entrance, and others still it’s dedicated liquor stores or nothing.

level 1

State dependent, as people have said.

In my state (Pennsylvania), the laws are weird and convoluted.

  • Beer can be sold by special stores that only sell beer, or bars/ restaurants.

  • Hard liquor can only be sold by state-run liquor stores.

  • Wine can be sold at the state-run liquor stores, or at bars/ restaurants

Some grocery stores have created a "bar/ restaurant" section of the store, exclusively for the purpose of selling wine and beer. Customers need to go through a separate checkout process for the alcohol, though.

level 2

So if you have a liquor store, are you considered a state employee?

level 1

Just moved here to Kansas.. Most grocery stores don't have Liquor. Need to go to a liquor store for that. But in Missouri it isn't like that at all.
