Is Frozen Chicken Wings Safe to Cook?

It’s perfectly normal to wonder if it’s safe to cook chicken while frozen, but no worry is necessary because the USDA has verified that frozen chicken can indeed be cooked either on a stove or in an oven. In this case, we’re substituting the oven for an air fryer.

So yes, you can air fry frozen chicken wings to have delicious, dish-ready food with little time and effort. Just make sure to measure if your chicken is cooked to at least an internal temperature of 165°F to be on the safe side. You can measure this with a food thermometer.

What Is In The Seasoning Mix For These Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks?

You can use any seasoning mix for your wings. I used my homemade chicken seasoning mix in this recipe.

How To Make Frozen Wings In The Air Fryer

How To Air Fry Frozen Chicken Wings

  • Spray the air fryer basket with either non-stick spray or some olive oil. I skipped this step because my air fryer’s non-stick coating is excellent.
  • Put the frozen chicken wings on the air fryer basket.
  • Next, make sure the wings cook for about 5 minutes at 400 degrees. This will help to defrost the chicken.
  • You can now go ahead and add your seasonings.
  • Continue to cook for about twenty minutes until the skin looks crispy and nice and reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Flip halfway between.
  • Coat with your favorite sauce if desired.

You may have noticed that there’s no need to spray or grease the wings before cooking them. I still end up with crispy wings without the spray, but you can still spray them a bit if you desire.

Can Chicken Wings Be Reheated

If you’re left with some leftovers, feel free to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It’s completely fine to do so. These leftovers can last for three days. So any time you start to crave this dish again, feel free to reheat the wings by placing them into the air fryer basket and cook for about 3-4 minutes at 350°F.

How Long To Cook Frozen Wings

Cooking frozen chicken wings doesn’t take much of your time. It takes about 25-30 minutes to cook. It’s about 5 to 6 minutes extra time when cooking them frozen compared to when cooking them thawed or fresh, which is quite impressive considering all the hassle you’re skipping with this technique.

Tips And Techniques For Air Frying Frozen Chicken Wing

  • Do not try to hasten your work by adding too many wings to the basket at once. It could stop them from cooking properly and can make a mess. Make sure to load the air fryer basket in just ONE layer and cook in batches when necessary.
  • Make sure to remove the liquid that will gather at the bottom of the air fryer. This will help the wing come out nicely crisp.
  • Also, be careful with the liquid at the bottom of the basket. It is very hot, and you need to exercise caution and patience while cooking to avoid hurting yourself.
  • To ensure the wings are properly seasoned, place them in a bowl and rub thoroughly until the ingredients are well soaked in.
  • Like I said earlier, the time used in cooking depends on how big your chicken wings are. Bigger wings will definitely take more time to cook than smaller ones, so keep that in mind.

What To Serve With Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Wings

You can serve these crispy chicken wings with any dipping of your choice and pair them with roasted potatoes, broccoli, potato wedges, or mashed potatoes and gravy. Don’t be surprised if your family asks for another plate of this incredible dish that tastes heavenly.
