Are dental implants covered by health insurance

Are you considering getting a dental implant? If you have a tooth that is missing or severely damaged and needs to be replaced, a dental implant is the best possible solution. The only disadvantage to dental implants is the cost. Dental implants are considered to be the gold standard of tooth replacement options, and the price tag proves it.

Will dental insurance help cover the cost of dental implants? What about medical insurance? It depends on the situation and a few different factors.

What is a Dental Implant?

To understand insurance coverage related to dental implants, it helps to understand the procedure.

A dental implant is a complete artificial tooth and root system. The implant root is made of titanium, which is a biocompatible material. The titanium root is surgically placed in the jaw where it fuses with the bone to form a secure hold. The abutment, a small post that sticks up above the gums, is then attached to the implant root. The crown attaches to the abutment and the process is complete.

The implant looks and functions as closely as possible to your natural tooth, which is why it is considered to be the best tooth replacement option.

How and When Does Insurance Cover Implants?

As with most insurance plans and providers, there are very specific stipulations that apply to if and how dental implants are covered.

  • Some dental insurance plans include coverage for dental implants, but most don’t. Most dental insurance plans consider implants to be a cosmetic procedure, which is a category of dental services that is not usually covered. If they are covered, the amount or percentage of coverage depends on your plan.
  • In some cases the crown portion of the implant is covered by dental insurance but the implant root is covered by medical insurance.
  • If the original tooth was lost because of a medical condition, medical insurance may cover the implant.
  • If the original tooth was lost due to an accident, the implant may be covered under accident or medical insurance.
  • Most dental and medical insurance plans have a deductible that must be met first before coverage will apply. If the cost of one dental implant is below the deductible, you may have to pay for it out of pocket.
  • Many dental insurance plans also have an annual maximum. If this is the case, you may want to try and split the different procedures across two different years. For example, you could get the implant root placed in December and then wait until January to have the abutment and crown attached.

What to Do if Dental Implants are Not Covered

Don’t forgo the procedure simply because your insurance plan doesn’t cover it. Dental implants have many benefits over other tooth replacement options, such as bridges. A bridge does damage to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and may not last forever. An implant will most likely last for the rest of your life.

Financing options can make the dental implant procedure more affordable. CareCredit is designed specifically for medical and dental procedures. With no interest financing and low monthly payments, you can afford to get the dental implant you need.

At 508 Dentist, one of our specialties is the placement of dental implants. We will do our best to appeal to your insurance provider to get your procedure covered if at all possible. Today, dental implants are widely considered to be the best way to replace missing teeth.

Dental Implant Insurance

There is no other existing method that is as strong, secure or as long-lasting as dental implants.

And treatments as successful and effective as this tend to come at higher prices, which means many patients often consider dental implant insurance. But does it exist?

Are dental implants covered by health insurance

Although this will be dependent on your insurance provider, cosmetic dentistry is not usually covered by dental insurance.

As is the case with most dental coverage plans, insurance tends not to cover implant dentistry. This is down to the argument that there are cheaper methods to replace missing teeth.

It is likely that the insurance will cover cheaper treatments like dentures or bridges.

It’s a tendency for insurance companies to cover 100% of preventative care costs like basic general dentistry treatments like tooth extractions, fillings and gum disease treatments. Rather than when a tooth has been lost.

HOWEVER, this is a general overview

Especially more recently, there are more and more insurance plans that are beginning to include dental implants in their coverage.

This is because dental implants are beginning to gain more traction in their superiority.

And as it lasts longer than any other treatment form, insurance companies are actually seeing this as a way they, and you can save money too!

AXA Health, for example, claims to offer 50% towards implant treatments. More.

Check with your provider

It’s advisable to always check with your provider and see if they might be planning to cover this in their policy in future.

Every policy is unique and is often built around you and your medical needs – so checking whether or not you are covered might be worthwhile before committing.

Example: Vitality pays a portion of the cost.

The overall cost of dental implants

There are several different types of implants and each type varies in cost.

The price will also be dependent on any additional treatments that need to be done prior to or along with your implant procedure.

Additional procedures include bone grafts and sinus lifts, which might be necessary before your implant procedure.

We will work with you to carry out an analysis of your specific needs.

Following your requirements, we will create a treatment and payment plan suitable for you.

Prices include implant, post and crown.

Very happy with all aspects of the work they have done. Very clean, professional and well run business.

Dr Ali Rifai was professional and I am very pleased with the outcome of my Invisalign's. I have been with this practice for many years and would highly recommend. The staff are very friendly and nothing is an issue.

Can't thank this practice enough for all their help. I don't post reviews very often, so when I do, it's because an impression has been left! Dr Ali saw me at short notice to help fix a broken tooth. The nurse (I think her name was Danni) was so helpful and kind, as were the rest of the team. Thank you for being there for me in my hour of need (the same day i asked for an appointment!)

I’m so happy to find this practice. I suffer from anxiety and high sensitivity to pain. It was very stressful for me going to dentist after years of fear. The team not only make me calm and welcome but I FELL ASLEEP during treatment with Dr Marshall ! So understanding and caring. Thank you!

I have been using this dentist for well over a decade and can honestly say my teeth would be in a far worse situation if wasn’t for the Gentle Dental practice. My most recent visit was for a filling .. barely felt the injection!I would highly recommend this dentist to anyone, but especially if you’re teeth require a high level of care like mine.

This place was recommended to me by family and for a nervous patient the best experience. The reception welcome is cheerful and friendly, beautifully modern area with hot drinks and water on offer.I needed implants, crowns and bridges followed by whitening, so lots of appointments. My dentist Mr Ali Rafai was superb from start to finish, so professional and personable. Throughout the whole process I was cared for wonderfully plus lots of laughs along the way. The constant care during appointments was very comforting, no rushing, and I knew I my needs were Mr Rafai's priority. Plus check up call the next day without fail to make sure everything was going well.Absolutely deserves five stars!

Fantastic experience with Ali. It took 18 months including bone grafting, removing and replacing failed dental implants, invisaline for my bottom teeth which were all over the place and some veneers but now I'm delighted with the outcome.Ali was always very clear about how this wasn't an overnight solution in an honest and forthright manner which gave me confidence that he would deliver results.I was offered several overnight solutions from other dentists locally at a fraction of the cost but when I see how much effort and detail that went into my plan, I know i made the right choice.

I have got no complaints about this Dental Practice. They were all very friendly and accommodating and always professional. My dental treatment was also really good, everything went according to plan and the results are great!I am VERY happy with the outcome and would recommend them anytime!
