Steps for Replacing a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Key Fob Battery

The exterior part of your Jeep key fob is just two pieces of plastic that snap together. Inside the fob are a battery, a little circuit board, and a rubber keypad. It’s a simple little electronic tool overall. Here are the steps to replace the battery in it.

First, you will need:

A new CR2032 battery
A small flathead screwdriver (or a pocketknife)

Follow these steps to resurrect your Jeep Grand Cherokee key fob:

Release the key from the fob and set it aside.
Inspect the fob near the keyring mount. You should see a little seam there. Insert the flathead screwdriver in the seam. If your screwdriver is too thick, the point of a pocketknife blade should do the trick.
Use LIGHT PRESSURE on the screwdriver to gently pry the two plastic halves of the fob apart. Did we mention to use light pressure? Do not use heavy pressure. Also, don’t use a twisting motion because that will wreck the plastic on the fob.
When the key fob is in two parts, you should see the circuit board in the interior on one side, and the battery on the other. Pop the old CR2032 battery out; you may need to use the screwdriver or a fingernail to get it loose.
Insert the new CR2032 battery in the key fob, facing the same direction as the old battery (positive side down).
The two halves of the fob should easily snap back together. That’s it! You’re done!

Now when your friends ask what you did over the weekend, you can brag that you fixed an electrical problem with your 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Introduction

I developed issues with the FOB not functioning right, needing to be close to the vehicle and in certain areas for it to work. Changing the battery was straight forward and restored its function immediately.

Here is the FOB for my Jeep. It decided to finally quit. The functionality became less over the last couple of weeks and required frequent attempts to unlock the vehicle etc.
Remove the key by moving
locking hatch to the left side first.
The two halves where the FOB needs to be split are clearly visible

Using a plastic opening tool (or finger nail, guitar pick etc.) start at the front of the FOB to separate it
Moving the tool along the split line with slight sideways pressure
will separate the FOB easily.

Here is the cleanly opened FOB
Bottom half of the FOB contains the CR2032 coin battery
Remove the battery by pulling it out of the holder pushing it gently against the spring contacts.
Replace the battery following the polarity with the positive side to the body of the FOB
