Is there a specific type of oil I should buy for my Jeep Grand Cherokee if I want to do an at-home oil change? Show Answer provided byThe exact oil you need for your Jeep Grand Cherokee depends on the year, trim level, and engine type. The 2022 Grand Cherokee comes with either a 3.6-liter V6 engine or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8. For the V6 engine, you’ll need 0W-20 synthetic oil. For the V8 engine, you’ll need 5W-20 synthetic oil. Fortunately, this generation and the last generation of the Grand Cherokee have the same engines—so if your Jeep is a 2011 model or newer, the same oil types will apply. If you have an older version of the Grand Cherokee, it’s important to look into the exact engine that powers your SUV. As for brands, Jeep recommends using Mopar, Pennzoil, or Shell Helix oil. However, if you have a different preferred brand, it should be fine as long as it’s the right type and it’s fully synthetic. If you’re not sure which oil is right for your Jeep Grand Cherokee, it’s best to double-check your owner’s manual. It should also contain basic directions for an at-home oil change, as well as information regarding oil filters. My manual came with a yellow "addenum" card that says, "The manufacturer recommends the use of a full synthetic SAE 0W-40 engine oil or equivelent." I did not get anything like this. What year is yours? It is the V6 correct? Any chance you could scan or take a picture of this addendum? Joined Jun 11, 2010 · 488 Posts
Here's a pic. I have a '12 v6. Joined Jun 11, 2010 · 488 Posts
Now that I posted the pic, I notice the number at the bottom right says "12SRT8". I bet this card is intended to add information for just the SRT. If so, that point is not clear at all, at least not to me.

OP, I was always told to do that first one between 500-1200 miles. So I feel you on the early oil change. I only use Mobile 1 synthetic in my vehicles. Joined Dec 22, 2010 · 6,544 Posts
