Guest Show Transmission won't shift into overdrive, and speedometer doesn't work Ray The VSS for the CD4E is below the firewall transmission mount- on the transmission. It faces up. Crawl under the vehicle and look around the bottom of the driver's side firewall on the transmission. Master Tech Lee The Vehicle Speed Sensor is located at the lower rear of the transaxle.

This might help you , " REPLACE SPEED SENSOR IN 1996 FORD CONTOUR And " Thanksto the above info, I was able to fix my 1995 Ford Contour VSS problems, however I think this will make it easier for the Contour: With some of the above instructions copy and pasted here: jack up car on front driver side. Remove Drivers side front wheel. Crawl under car by firewall. Look up on transmission (mid vehicle), you should see the bottom of the VSS as it screws into the top of the transmission - loosen VSS (turn 1/4 turn). Open hood, Disconnect neg cable from battery (safety first) Okay at this point remove left Wheel and platic fender guard, look towards firewall and you'll see the other end of the VSS connector, simply press and pull outwardly, this removes the vss, at least it was easier for me. I was told I needed a transmission, because of hard shifts and slipping out of gear, however it was the vss sensor, I just wanted to add that for those of you who are troubled, thanks again to the above post because it gave me hope I tried it and it worked! " What are the symptoms of a failing speed sensor?5 Common Bad Speed Sensor Symptoms. Transmission problems. ... . Erratic speedometer readings. ... . Inability to engage cruise control. ... . Lack of torque converter clutch application. ... . Check Engine Light is triggered. ... . An internal electrical fault in the speed sensor. ... . Damage on the sensor itself. ... . Poor vehicle maintenance.. Which speed sensor controls the transmission?A car has two speed sensors: the ISS and the OSS, working together to show the transmission data to the car's powertrain module. The ISS sensor monitors the input shaft's speed. If these sensors get misaligned, the operation of the transmission system will be affected.
