Is Horn Honking Really Necessary to Lock Your Car?

Disable horn honk when exiting running vehicle jeep

A good friend from the west coast recently posted an interesting blog on his facebook page. It seems the homeowners in his neighborhood have become upset with the unnecessary noise produced by horn honking. No, not the honking at someone's untethered pet in the street, but the annoying blast created by drivers who have to double-click their vehicle's remote fob every time they lock the doors.

Why Should You Care About Noise Pollution?

Most vehicle owners never think about the noise pollution that is created when they are simply too lazy to have pressed the door lock upon exiting their vehicle. However, the collective effect of a neighborhood, a community, a township, a city, a state, a region, a country, a continent -- you get the point -- produces an overwhelming amount of noise pollution.

When you stop and think about it, horns were designed to use as a warning device and not to let everyone know that you are exiting your car or truck. Moreover, excess noise can be a bad thing and the extra honks can become an abrasive and anxiety-producing sound. Not only does it add to environmental noise pollution, it desensitizes people to a "honk" being issued as an alerting sound or warning.

Quick Fix to Eliminate Unwanted Horn Honking*

According to Michael Parra at the Your Mechanic website, it is not that difficult to silence the horn beep feature when using your auto key remote. Your car is set by default to honk the horn when you lock your doors with the remote fob. However, you can change this if you prefer.

What to do to deactivate the horn honk feature:

  1. Press both the lock and unlock buttons on your remote for two seconds.
  2. Watch for the hazard lights to flash three times.
  3. Lock the doors and confirm that the horn does not sound.

If you want to reactivate the horn honk feature:

  1. Press and hold both the lock and unlock buttons on the remote for at least two seconds.
  2. Watch for the hazard lights to flash once. The horn should honk one time.

Every vehicle made with the "honk when locked" feature can be programmed out by the owner or the dealer. If this does not work on your vehicle, check the Operator's Manual that came with your car or truck. If you installed a third party system, then check the instructions manual for disabling the noise pollution.

*NOTE: Turning off the horn honking feature does not affect the panic alarm function or vehicle's security system. Plus, your headlights will still give you a warm and fuzzy wink.

It has become annoying to hear the car horn every time I get out the car while it is on or running.

Agreed, I looked but could not find an option on any of the menus.

@JeepCares , if you see this please make a note to the software people, making this optional or eliminating it completely would be great.

This topic keeps coming up with many owners.

I just moved up from a 2018 Compass and this wasn’t an issue. The Uconnect software is different from model to model?

Hi all! Thank you for brining this annoyance to my attention. I double checked the Owner's Manual but couldn't find a way to turn it off. I will certainly make note of this and if an option to turn it off becomes available, we will let you know!

One option is to leave the key fob in the car.

I may be in the minority here, but I appreciate the horn reminder. There has been more than one occasion with my other keyless vehicles where either I or someone else have accidentally left it running. This could be a disaster when in an enclosed are like a garage.

It seems to sound the horn at very strange times though. If I remote start it, then open the door, get in with the key on me and close the door (not locking the door), the horn then sounds 3 times. Why? Does it think I may lock the key inside. Getting in after remote starting and the horn sounding gets me odd stares from people nearby who think I don't know how to work my vehicle.

I haven't tried remote starting yet. However, I agree it wouldn't make sense to sound the horn when getting in the vehicle. The horn should sound when remote starting but not again when getting in.

I get a honk when I do this with any door other than drivers.

I will remote start, open a back door with the key in my pocket, throw my bag in, close the door... 3 beeps. Embarrassing since everyone looks while I open the drivers door and get in. like someone else said, makes it seem like I have no idea what I'm doing.

Another scenario, remote starting in the garage, open the back door, put my infant daughter in, close door... 3 beeps. Startles my daughter and annoys the neighbors.

This "feature" is bad news all around. I honestly might start not using remote start at times just to avoid this.

Not the safest option at all.

huh? that's literally what you should be doing. If it wasn't a push button start car you would always have to leave the key in the car if you got out while it's running.

Why would you leave your key fob in a running car? What if someone took it? If I had a car with an actual key that starts the car, I wouldn’t leave it in the ignition while it was running.

The situation that I find all the time is something like running into the gas station for a drink/whatever. My wife is still in the car so I just leave it running and hop out to do whatever. Definitely don't want the car honking at me. Everyone is gonna think she is honking at me and pissed 😂

I own a pizza store and sometimes I deliver pizzas. When I get out of the car the horn beeps the customers think im honking at them. Need a way to turn this feature off

I just ran into this issue yesterday. I pulled the Jeep out of the garage and let it warm up in the driveway while I went to take the trash cans to the curb. As soon as I shut the door the horn beeps 3 times. Very annoying.

It should beep only if you try to Lock the doors while the key is inside the car, that's how it was on my 2018 Durango.
I also get the 3 honks after remote starts, so annoying.

I know this is not a great fix or anything especially if it’s raining. When you get out of the car if you let the door shut but not all the way (slight latch that would keep the door ajar indicated) it won’t beep at all if you leave with the keys.

How do I turn off horn honk?

What to do to deactivate the horn honk feature: Press both the lock and unlock buttons on your remote for two seconds. Watch for the hazard lights to flash three times. Lock the doors and confirm that the horn does not sound.

Why does my car keep honk on its own?

If your car horn is taking on a life of its own it could be due to the following issues: A faulty relay. A short circuit. A faulty horn push button.

Why does my horn go off when I turn?

But an inoperative car horn can also be caused by a bad horn switch in your steering wheel, a broken “clock spring” under the steering wheel, a bum horn relay, a broken wire, or a corroded ground. Here's how to check the most likely suspects: Start by checking the fuse. Refer to the owner's manual for its location.

Why does my car horn go off when I unlock the door?

It's actually the alarm system that is doing it. If you are locking the doors, by pressing the interior door lock, this activates the alarm. The only way not to activate the alarm is lock the door with the key from the outside. 1.
