"Jeremiah had a dream that there was a little girl with dirty blonde hair and her name was Poppy," Berkus tells PEOPLE
Nate Berkus and husband Jeremiah Brent are in baby paradise.
The 43-year-old interior designer told PEOPLE on Wednesday at the Up2Us Sports Gala that taking care of their newborn daughter Poppy has been full of new discoveries.
“The truth is we love being parents,” Berkus says. “Yesterday she liked monkey sounds and she smiles and giggles and now she kicks her feet. So it’s really fun and neither of us have ever had more fun.”
Long before the birth of their baby girl — Poppy was born via surrogate in March — and even before they discovered they would be welcoming a daughter, the couple decided on a name for their first child.
“Jeremiah had a dream that there was a little girl with dirty blonde hair and her name was Poppy. He woke up and he was like, ‘Do you like the name Poppy?’ And I do, so that’s her,” Berkus explains.
“However, I would like to say that both Jamie Oliver, whose daughter’s name is Poppy, and a friend of mine have taken credit for it,” Berkus jokes. “And Jason, who was one of the executive producers on Dream Builders has a 3-year-old named Poppy. He was like, ‘I can’t believe you took the name!’ ”
But the best part about newfound fatherhood?
“It feels like she’s always been there,” Berkus explains. “And that’s a really comfortable place to be.”

Interior designing superstars Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent have shared a photo of their newborn baby along with the bittersweet story behind the child’s name.
The proud new dads welcomed their second child, Oskar Michael Brent-Berkus, on March 26. In the latest issue of People magazine, they revealed the baby was named after Berkus’s former partner, Fernando Bengoechea, who was killed in a 2004 Sri Lankan tsunami.
“His middle name was Oskar,” Berkus said.
The idea behind the tribute, he added, came from Brent.
“We have always honored Fernando’s memory in our relationship. He’s a part of our love story,” Brent said. “It’s such an important chapter in Nate’s life. So the idea that we can honor his memory in a beautiful way was exciting to us.”
Oskar, who was born via surrogate, is the second child for the couple, the hosts of TLC's "Nate & Jeremiah By Design.” Berkus, 46, and Brent, 33, have been married since 2014.
The couple said Bengoechea also has played an influence in the life of their other child, 3-year-old daughter Poppy.
“She has photos of him and she’ll know his whole story,” Brent said. “We both believe that the good stuff and the bad stuff is what really defines us. The kids will know both of our stories, where their names came from, and why.”
The couple said they approach parenting in a more relaxed way the second time around.
“We know what to do. We know what our weaknesses are individually,” Brent said. “We’re actually having the most beautiful time.”

During an interview with people.com, Nate Berkus shared how they named their daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus. Jeremiah had a dream that there was a little girl with dirty blonde hair, and her name was Poppy. He woke up, and he was like, ‘Do you like the name Poppy?’ And I do, so that’s her.”
On the occasion of her third birthday, her father Nate Berkus upload an Instagram photo captioning,
“Happy Birthday Poppy. We can’t believe you are 3…”
On the other hand, Jeremiah Brent also uploaded a picture of her daughter via Instagram, captioned:
“It feels like you were just born 3 minutes ago- and yet part of me knows we have all done this before together. Now on your 3rd birthday, I watch in disbelief as you continue to grow phenomenally.. with grace, strength, audacity, intuition, belief, and authority. Happy Birthday, Poppy. 3 years ago today life, love, possibility- all cracked open. We love you Completely.”
Similarly, on 26 March 2018, Jeremiah Brent and Nate Berkus welcomed their younger baby boy into their family, and likewise, the older sister, namely Oskar Brent Berkus, was also born through surrogacy.
Since the birth of both children, Jeremiah Brent and Nate Berkus have been enjoying their fatherhood.
At the same time, they are juggling the balance between their time and attention for their little angels and their commitment.
However, Poopy Brent-Berkus’ mother’s name is yet to be disclosed in the public media.
