For seven years, beer from Indianapolis' largest brewery has been unavailable for purchase from grocery and convenience stores. The reason: Per Indiana law, these retailers are unable to sell beer refrigerated, which  Sun King says is necessary for freshness.

Until now.

Sun King has announced that two of its year-round brews, Sunlight Cream Ale and Wee Mac Scottish Ale, now will be sold at retailers including CVS, Fresh Market, Kroger, Marsh, Meijer, Sam's Club, Target, Wal-Mart and Whole Foods.

So yes, this means the brewery has found a way to maintain its quality standards even after the beer warms.

These Indiana beers are gold medal winners

Since Sun King opened in 2009, the brewery has chosen to always keep its beer cold throughout its lifetime — from the canning line to trucks to liquor store coolers.

“Beer is best fresh kept cold. We still wholeheartedly believe in that,” said Dave Colt, co-founder and head brewer of Sun King.

But through modernized equipment, processing and technology and two years of extensive research, the brewery finally has gotten to a point where Colt and his partners feel they can have a few of beers out there for people that will taste just fine 90 days in, even if the beer hasn’t been kept refrigerated.

Those super science-y improvements include a gas chromatograph, a programmable centrifuge, a new canning line and an updated lab. This allows the brewery to keep things that harm beer out, like light and oxygen, and to test the health and viability of the beer over time.

However, Colt said not to expect any hop-heavy beers on grocery shelves anytime soon. “Hops are very sensitive to temperature,” he said. “We’ve been trialing Osiris, which is our hoppy house beer year-round, but it just hasn’t been able to maintain good flavor unrefrigerated for 90 days. …   It doesn’t taste bad; it just doesn’t taste the same.”

Other less hoppy seasonal brews such as Octoberfests or Irish Stouts may be available at grocery and convenience stores  down the road, Colt said.

Sun King Brewing quality manager Kevin Smolar measures dactyl, a flavor in all beers in the Sun King Brewing Lab inside the company's Downtown facility.

Also new, Sunlight and Wee Mac will be sold at groceries and convenience stores in six- and 12-packs of 12-ounce cans. Typically Sun King beers are packaged in four-packs of 16-ounce cans, but they have found 12-ounce cans to be better for the retail space.

The brewery still recommends that beer be refrigerated and consumed within 90 days of its packaged date, which is printed on all cans.

Cans are expected to hit grocery shelves statewide starting July 25.
