What is a dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists care for people of all ages.

How long before herpes outbreak is it still contagious?

While an outbreak isn't necessary for herpes transmission, herpes is most contagious about 3 days before an outbreak; this usually coincides with an itching or burning sensation or pain in the area where the outbreak will occur.

Can you spread herpes after an outbreak?

Having sores or other symptoms of herpes can increase your risk of spreading the disease. Even if you do not have any symptoms, you can still infect your sex partners. You may have concerns about how genital herpes will impact your health, sex life, and relationships.

How do you know when herpes is healing?

The blisters open and become sores. The sores turn crusty and heal slowly over 1 to 2 weeks. By 3 weeks, the sores have completely healed without leaving a scar. Sometimes flu-like symptoms, such as swollen glands, headache, body aches and fever also develop.

How long is the herpes virus active after an outbreak?

An initial herpes outbreak lasts around 14 days but can take up to six weeks for sores to fully heal (Saleh, 2020). Later outbreaks aren't re-infection with the same virus. They're the same virus “waking up.” Herpes viruses remain in your body and park themselves in your nerves.
