What is the number one dermatologist recommended skin care brand

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any serious skincare junkie will have an interesting shelfie. Next to the shiny glass bottles of USD 1,000 serums there will be a well squeezed, unglamourous tube from the pharmacy skincare category. It’s the Romy and Michelle of skincare, the USD 1000 cica-hyaluronic-ceramide-mugwort-blue pea-rice flour serum next to the 2-buck face wash—the unassuming dynamic duo who dared to give great skin. And most bets of what the more efficacious product is are on the unassuming tube that looks like it came from the pharmacy. Because that’s exactly where it came from. Yes, it did cost 2 bucks. And yes, it’s the bomb.

Pharmacy skincare is creeping into the spotlight, nudging out Sephora and Ulta bestsellers. They’re infinitely less expensive, more accessible, and surprise, sometimes even more effective. The latter could be because they’re pared back skincare, with as few ingredients as possible and therefore less likely to cause skin irritation. “Pharma products are more concentrated or rather the proper ingredient in the correct strength and formulation. Hence it gives the desired effect,” explains Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic. They’re also cheaper because not much has been invested in their look or messaging. “They need to be accessible to a wide section of people,” adds Dr Mikki Singh, Head Dermatologist at Bodycraft Skin Clinic. “These companies would rather spend on R&D, while cosmetic products spend a large chunk of their resources on celebrity endorsement and marketing.” So you can use the ‘active of the season’ and not spend big bucks before finding out you’re deathly allergic to it. We spoke to some of the country’s leading dermatologists to find out what skincare we can pick them from the pharmacy.

Dr Meghna Gupta, Delhi Skin Centre

“A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I often see people develop Contact Dermatitis from trying products on their own. They skip the finer details you get in a consultation as to how to slowly incorporate new products into your routine.” Having said that she does recommend a Vitamin C serum for a boost of antioxidants, like Ever C20 Vitamin C serum to bring out that glow. A barrier repair cream with colloidal oatmeal or squalene or ceramides to nourish and protect, like MaxRich Yu cream and most importantly, a sunscreen for your skin type. “Choose Choose between Rivela Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50, ZScreen Sinc Oxide Sunscreen Gel or Acne UV-Gel SPF 30,” says Dr Gupta.

Dr Mikki Singh, Head Dermatologist at Bodycraft Skin Clinic

“Start with a face wash like Cetaphil daily facial cleanser, then a good moisturiser like Bioderma Sebium Hydra and top it off with a sunscreen like UV Skrin SS SPF 30 Gel. Dermatica Aze Proactive Lotion contains several active ingredients. It works great for those suffering from acne marks and is suitable even during pregnancy.”

Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic

  • Cleanser—Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion, Sebamed Foaming Face Wash, Glownise Face Wash
  • Moisturiser—Moiz LMF 48 lotion, Cetaphil DAM lotion, Ahaglow Acne Control Moisturising Gel
  • Sunscreen—Sebamed Multiprotect Sun Lotion SPF 50+, UV Doux Silicon Sunscreen Gel SPF 50, Cetaphil Sun SPF 50, UV Avo Pro SPF 30+ Gel

Dr Janet Castelino, DermaZeal

“It is advisable to obtain professional advice because the type of skin issue, type, and objective differ. When used incorrectly, most actives are known to produce redness and irritation, therefore it’s always better to be cautious. If you’re going to the beach, use a broad-spectrum, high-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen. Choose a lightweight non-comedogenic sunscreen if you have acne-prone skin. For various skin indications, different actives are employed. Acne is treated with topical retinoids, and hyperpigmentation and melasma are treated with kojic acid and azelaic acid.”

Dr Chiranjiv Chhabra, Director, Alive Wellness Clinics

Dr Chabbra recommends sunscreens from Neutrogena, Sesderma and Dermalogica. “I would recommend a retinol point five to 1% cream, which can be used overnight. Over the years it helps stimulating collagen, keeping skin tighter and helping to reduce lines and wrinkles. It also stimulates exfoliation and also helps in hyperpigmentation and patchy skin.”

The best face suncream to wear all year round (but especially during a heatwave)

The best thing about being a beauty editor is that I get the opportunity to speak with some of the world’s top beauty experts basically every single day. From celebrity makeup artists to surgeons, I am forever picking the brains of experts in a bid to learn everything there is to know about beauty. And while picking up different makeup tips and tricks is wonderful, the one thing I am always most fascinated by is the sort of products skin experts swear by.

There’s no doubt that shopping for skincare can be daunting and often frustrating, and not just because of the abundance of choice. All too often we are let down by miracle claims that don’t live up to their promises. And while most medical skin experts and dermatologists insist that if you have serious skin concerns, you should always seek expert advice, there are a handful of accessible skincare brands that they wax lyrical about.

From salicylic acid cleansers and mineral sunscreen to clinical-grade serums, there are a number of brands and products that come highly recommended time and again. With expert-approved ingredients, when it comes to the skincare brands that derms love, you better believe you’ll see results. Keep scrolling to discover the brands and products that dermatologists always recommend.

French skincare is known for its glowing results, but La Roche-Posay really is in a league of its own. Much like all of the products to follow, its formulas are fuss-free and contain very few what I like to call “luxe additions,” meaning there’s little fragrance and no expensive-feeling slip to the products. They just work.

For years, dermatologists raved about CeraVe as the affordable skincare brand that everyone should know about. Again, with incredibly simple formulas that promote skin health in every way, it’s hard to go wrong.

While most of the other brands on this list can be purchased either in-store or via mainstream retailers, Exuviance is very much a clinical brand, and you may have to hunt a little harder to find it. It’s likely that you may not have heard of it before, but the shelves of some of the best aesthetics clinics around usually boast an impressive selection of Exuviance products.

While dermatologists do have some seriously great affordable recommendations up their sleeves, that’s not to say that the more expensive options are no good. In fact, SkinCeuticals is a brand that dermatologists continue to recommend despite its eye-watering prices. Loved by doctors, aestheticians, and facialists, its highly potent formulas are some of the best that money can buy.

If you haven’t already guessed, French pharmaceutical brands are a big hit among dermatologists. With simple, fuss-free formulas, they are a go-to for those with problem skin. Bioderma might be best known for its makeup artist–approved micellar water, but dermatologists and skin experts also swear by its Sébium range for controlling breakouts.
