If you are planning a trip to Canada, you need to be aware of the risks and travel restrictions as they relate to Covid-19. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) no longer recommends avoiding travel entirely, the federal government still designates Canada as a country with a Level 3—or High—Covid-19 incidence rate.

U.S. travelers are still permitted to travel to Canada for leisure but there are certain travel restrictions in place. Here’s what you need to know. Here’s what you need to know.

Current Travel Restrictions for Canada

Although Canada has gone through several iterations of travel restrictions, for now the country is keeping it simple: fully vaccinated individuals are allowed entry with proof of vaccination. For most cases, unvaccinated travelers won’t be able to visit.

Requirements to Enter Canada from the U.S.

Vaccination is still required for all travel into and out of Canada—a negative test will not be accepted unless the traveler is eligible for an exemption, such as a medical inability to be vaccinated.

To qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler to Canada, you must:

  • Have received two doses of a vaccine accepted for travel, a mix of two accepted vaccines or one dose of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  • Have received your second dose at least 14 calendar days before entry to Canada.
  • Have no symptoms or signs of Covid-19.
  • Follow pre-entry requirements, including submitting your travel information and proof of vaccination to the ArriveCAN portal.

Testing is no longer required for vaccinated individuals or for young children under the age of 5. However, if you are traveling with youth aged 5 or older who are unvaccinated (or partially vaccinated), you must instead provide a valid negative test. Acceptable tests include antigen tests taken within one calendar day or molecular tests (such as a PCR) taken within 72 hours before your scheduled flight or entry to Canada by land or water.

Although unvaccinated children may provide a negative test in lieu of vaccination, adults don’t have this same option. United States citizens traveling to Canada for tourism or business purposes must be fully vaccinated. Exceptions are only made under special circumstances.

All travelers must submit their travel information into ArriveCAN. The form asks for proof of vaccination as well as contact, travel and a proposed quarantine plan, should you fall ill while in Canada. The information must be submitted within 72 hours before arriving in Canada. Those who don’t submit their information can be denied boarding on the plane or entry into the country if traveling by land.

Requirements for Returning to the U.S. from Canada

As of June 12, U.S. citizens returning from Canada to the United States no longer need to provide a negative Covid-19 test in order to return home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the mandate that had required travelers to supply a negative Covid test or documentation of recovery in order to re-enter the U.S.

However, if you’re not a U.S. citizen or are on an immigrant visa, you’ll still need to show proof of vaccination to fly to the U.S. from Canada.
