2014 - Present Acura MDX Trim Configurations

Acura began production of the third generation MDX starting with the 2014 model year. For this generation, the MDX saw some significant changes over its previous generation and model years. For example, the 2014 saw an upgraded 3.5-liter V6 engine that is available in the buyer’s choice of front- or all-wheel drive. This generation was also the first to see standard features such as a seven-inch touch screen and noise-reducing windshield glass for a quieter ride. Compared to previous model years, the third generation of MDX is also more aerodynamic than previous designs and rides lower to the ground to reduce its center of gravity. Compared to previous model years, the third generation of MDX is also more aerodynamic than previous designs and rides lower to the ground to reduce its center of gravity.

In terms of Acura MDX mpg, this vehicle has increased a bit from 2014 to 2018. For the 2014 model year, for example, fuel economy is an estimated 21 mpg1 combined in its base trim all-wheel drive configuration, compared to an estimated 22 mpg1 combined for the 2018 model year with base 3.5-cylinder V6 engine and all-wheel drive.

As for Acura MDX towing capacity, the Acura MDX 2017 and Acura MDX 2018 are both capable of hauling up to an estimated 3,500 pounds.2

2014-2016 Trims

For the 2014 through 2016 model years, the Acura MDX was available in just one trim, but with a few optional add-on packages. Some of the standard features in the 2014 - 2016 Acura MDX include 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, heated front seats, leather upholstery, tri-zone climate control and touch-screen interface.

2017-2018 Trims

For the 2017 and 2018 model years, there are three trim options to choose from. There is also a Sport Hybrid edition that is designed for improved fuel efficiency over the standard 3.5-liter V6 engine.

  • Standard - 18-inch wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, tri-zone climate control, 7-inch touch-screen interface and smartphone integration
  • Technology - larger 20-inch wheels, remote engine start, blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert, upgraded 10-speaker sound system and navigation system.
  • Advance - automatic engine start/stop, heated steering wheel and front/rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, unique surround view camera, and ventilated front seats for added comfort.

Aside from these trims, there are also some other options to further customize your 2017 or 2018 Acura MDX. For example, buyers can opt for a DVD-based entertainment system for the rear seats.

Reviews for Acura MDX

Overall Rating

4.6 out of 5 (106 reviews)

My wife and I owned a '15 Pilot and sold it because my wife felt it was "too big" for her to drive comfortably. Months later we missed the convenience of having a a multiple passenger vehicle, so we went shopping again. She saw an MDX and asked, "what is that?". I told her it was just like a Pilot, but she wanted to try it. We drove one and bought one from CarMax. I drive it more often than she does, but she is more comfortable with the MDX (I know, but that's what she claims). I personally love the MDX. We went on a very long road trip (11 states!) and I'm not a person that likes to drives long distances, but I enjoyed the trip immensely! We love the safety features, quiet ride, roomy interior and the little extras that they offer over the Pilot. It just suits us very well.

Pros

  • Seat Comfort: Our Advance seats 7 people. We've had no complaints from any of our passengers about comfort. On long trips, it's wonderful!
  • Cabin Noise: Very quiet. Almost too quiet. I didn't hear an ambulance coming until it was very close to me. Taught me to listen more carefully for now on.
  • Reliability: I buy products that have a greater chance of being reliable. That's why I bought an Acura.

Cons

  • Technology and Entertainment: The model year we have does not have a digital speedometer. For my wife (from a different country) the digital speedometer is much more convenient. Not a problem. I ordered a small display and placed it just left of the instrument cluster on the dash. Hid the wires. It gets the speed from satellites. Works great! Problem solved.
  • Power: I would not say this is a con. The MDX has 3 modes for driving. The normal mode is not aggressive and gets better fuel economy ( we get around 26.5 mpg with mixed city and highway driving). But when you want to let this thing go, pop it in sport mode and you can feel the difference. It's like the engine "wakes up". The steering is stiffer too. When I need to have that extra "punch" I pop it into sport mode and it delivers, then I put it back in normal mode and it does everything I need. I'm not a NASCAR driver. I just want a comfortable, secure and economical (as much as you can expect from a vehicle this size) ride, which the MDX is all of that and more. The 3rd mode is comfort. The steering is very "soft" in that mode and does not suit me well.

i would not recommend CarMax to a friend… the price is too high.. APR is too high in most circumstances. certain locations aren’t professional and honestly I don’t want the car anymore my check engine is on I’ve only had it for 4 months as of July my oil sensor constantly beeps on and off, my wheel alignment needs to done, I’m selling the vehicle back to carmax

Pros

  • Interior Space: it’s a great family suv

Cons

  • Braking: absolutely not! i was almost in an accident I asked for CarMax to fix it.. I was referred to a partnership mechanic where it still was not fixed. not satisfied
  • Dashboard: all of my lights are on I’m confused as to why I have not received a call back on the complaint I made with customers relations it’s been like 2 weeks maybe 3
  • Cabin Noise: my vehicle now makes this chain like noise.. I may need some work done in which I’ve complained about in the beginning my gas burns extremely fast! my rear door does not automatically close sometimes so there has to be an issue there I just don’t want this vehicle

- Sonjita bryan, 2011 Acura MDX

It's a Honda essentially so the build quality is very good. The reliability is top notch and it's super comfortable. Takes corners like a car but heavier and more robust and sure footed than a car. Comfortably holds 7 people with the rear jump seats. Comes with the tow package and great entertainment system. The Bluetooth is easy to setup and a clean and reliable functioning system without the need to restate things over and over. Heated seats (no cooling in mine) and a quick to get hot heater make it perfect for winter. AC is chilly and perfect. Split zones for climate control. Memory for seat positions. Large glove box and cubbies.

Pros

  • Cabin Noise: quiet - great soundproofing compared to say, Toyota 4Runner
  • Ride and Handling: Smooth, like sailing on a magic carpet but can still "feel" the road
  • Interior Space: roomy, adequate, comfy, memory seats.

Cons

  • Fuel Economy: Not that I don't like it - but you're using premium all day every day here. You can get real time usage reports in the dash so drive economically and you will be fine.
