Ingredients

This copycat Starbucks recipe is made of simple ingredients that you can easily find in your pantry or at your local grocery store.

Starbucks iced white chocolate mocha with sweet cream cold foam
  • Homemade vanilla simple syrup. Made with water, sugar, and vanilla extract, it only takes a few minutes to make, and store leftovers in the fridge until next time!
  • White chocolate, chopped and melted
  • Milk. I used 2% milk.
  • Espresso. I used dark roast Starbucks coffee beans that I ground.
  • Ice.
  • Whipped cream. Make your own using heavy cream and a blender, sweetened with simple vanilla syrup to taste.

See the recipe card for quantities.

First, make the vanilla simple syrup. Combine the sugar, water, and vanilla extract in a small saucepan and place over medium heat.

Whisk together until heated and sugar is dissolved. This will only take a few minutes. It does not need to boil. As soon as the syrup is clear and the sugar is dissolved, it's done.

Next, add the vanilla extract. Let the vanilla syrup cool to room temperature.

To make the white chocolate syrup, begin by chopping the white chocolate into small pieces.

Next, melt the chocolate using your air fryer or microwave. For best results, use good-quality white chocolate. This will take about 2 minutes.

It melts quite quickly. Stir it periodically with a spoon until smooth and melted.

Then, brew fresh espresso using your preferred method, or make strong coffee instead.

Hint: Keep the simple syrup in the fridge so you can quickly make a homemade coffee anytime you want!

Note: This makes a large glass. For a smaller coffee, use a single shot of espresso and cut the rest of the ingredients in half.

Substitutions

If you're a fan of the Iced White Chocolate Mocha from Starbucks, you're in for a treat. There are a few simple substitutions you can make to create a similar drink at home:

  • Milk: Take note that Starbucks uses 2% whole milk. You can follow the type of milk they use or choose your milk of choice. Almond milk, soy milk, and oat milk are great substitutes for this recipe. Skim milk is also a great substitute and will reduce the calories and fat content of the drink.
  • White chocolate sauce: You can buy the white chocolate sauce on Amazon if you want the same flavor profile. You can also substitute the white chocolate sauce with dark chocolate sauce. Dark chocolate will give the drink a richer flavor. You can also use hazelnut or almond syrup, which pairs well with coffee and has a richer flavor. You can also use cheap white chocolate chips in a pinch if you need to.
  • Espresso: Instead of espresso, you can use strong brewed coffee, instant espresso powder, or instant coffee. You could also use cold brew coffee; it has a smoother taste than espresso and is less acidic.
  • Whipped cream: You could also top this iced mocha with cold foam.

Variations

  • Skinny white chocolate mocha- This is a lower-calorie version of the regular iced white chocolate mocha. It's made with espresso, nonfat milk, and sugar-free white chocolate syrup.
  • Double chocolate iced white chocolate mocha- This variation has twice the amount of chocolate. It's made with espresso, milk, white chocolate syrup, and dark chocolate chips.
  • Caramel iced white chocolate mocha- This variation includes caramel sauce and the usual ingredients of espresso, milk, and white chocolate syrup.
  • Hazelnut iced white chocolate mocha- This variation includes hazelnut syrup and the usual ingredients of espresso, milk, and white chocolate syrup.
  • Alternatively, while people usually consume this beverage as a cold coffee drink, you can keep it hot if you’re fond of hot drinks. For example, hot white chocolate mocha is an excellent variation on hot chocolate for winter.
  • Make a blended drink by adding ice and blend until smooth. This will give it a frappe-like consistency.
  • Top with whipped cream, extra chocolate sauce, and chocolate shavings for a decadent treat.

Equipment

If you're a Starbucks iced white chocolate mocha fan, you might be surprised to learn that you can easily make this tasty treat at home with just a couple of pieces of equipment.

To make the coffee, you can use a French press, Moka pot, coffee maker, or espresso maker (Nespresso works great). Here's the difference between them:

  • French press: French presses are one of the most popular ways to make coffee at home, and for a good reason. They're easy to use and produce a rich, full-flavored cup of coffee.
  • Espresso maker or Nespresso: If you want to make iced espresso drinks at home, you'll need an espresso maker or Nespresso machine. These machines brew concentrated shots of coffee that you can use in various iced beverages or hot drinks.
  • Moka pot: A Moka pot is a stovetop coffee maker designed explicitly for making espresso-style coffee. It's a great option if you don't have an espresso machine and produces a strong and flavorful cup of coffee.

Once your coffee is made, combine it with the melted white chocolate in a blender and blend until smooth.

Storage

Store any leftover iced mocha in the fridge in a covered container or jar for up to 2 days. Shake well before serving.

Store vanilla simple syrup in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Top tips

  • Start with a strong coffee base. I like to use espresso, but you could also use very strong coffee. For example, if you use regular coffee, you might want to increase the amount of coffee by about 50%.
  • Use good quality white chocolate. I like Lindt, Ghirardelli, or Baker’s brand (which is easy to find at the grocery store).
  • Add milk – I used 2%, but you could use whole milk if you want a richer drink. Of course, half and half would work well, too!
  • Sweeten to taste – Start with less simple syrup, and add more to taste.
  • Again, you don’t need an espresso machine for this recipe. You can certainly use instant coffee or cold brew. However, it won’t have the same strong coffee flavor.
  • On the other hand, for a milder coffee taste, you can add just one shot of espresso or use blonde espresso.
  • You can use sweetened condensed milk if you don’t have white mocha sauce.
  • You can use coffee ice cubes to avoid watering down your drink, especially for extra hot summer days.
