Key Considerations For Adopting A Dog

Before adopting a dog, there are some key considerations that you should take into account including your lifestyle, expenses and family’s needs.

Here are some questions that you can ask before making this big decision:

1. Is your family ready for a dog?

Adding a new member to your family can be difficult for young children. Thus, it’s important to take your child’s age and interests into account when making this decision.

Furthermore, you may also wish to consider whether it’s the right time to adopt a dog, especially if you’re planning to have more children.

2. Do you have the time and financial capacity to care for a dog?

Adopting a dog is a long-term commitment. It’s crucial to ensure that you have the time and financial capacity to care for your pup’s needs throughout his life.

Some essential costs that you’ll incur when raising him includes:

ItemsCostLicensing$15 - $230Sterilisation$150 - $500
(Costs less for males)Microchipping$50 - $90Vaccination$30 - $60Dental scaling$150 - $600Medical and dental checkups$50+ per consultationFood$120+ per monthGrooming$50+ per session

Other expenses that you may incur include toys, accessories and pet insurance.

3. What kind of dog is more suitable for your lifestyle?

Depending on the dog’s breed, he may have certain needs and temperament that you’ll need to be prepared for. For example, certain breeds require daily exercise and can’t be left alone for extended periods of time.

Thus, you’re advised to find out more about the different breeds before selecting a pup for adoption!

Note!
The National Parks Board and Animal and Veterinary Service have recently released Guidelines for Rehoming and Adoption of Dogs.

This document aims to find a suitable home for each dog, facilitate a smooth transition for adopted dogs to minimise stress and improve the long-term quality of life of a dog.

If you’re planning to adopt a dog, you’re strongly encouraged to familiarise yourself with these guidelines!

Dog Adoption Process in Singapore

Rescue dogs available for adoption near me
Rescue dogs available for adoption near me

This is a general adoption process:

  1. Find a dog for adoption by visiting adoption drives or browsing the adoption centre’s or shelter’s website.
  2. Once you’ve found a dog that you’re interested in, express your interest to the organisation.
  3. The organisation will contact you to schedule a meeting with your potential pet.
  4. If you’re still keen on the adoption, you’ll have to take a pre-adoption assessment.
  5. After which, you’ll experience a minimum of a 1-week homestay with your pup.
  6. If you and your fur friend are deemed to be suitable for one another, you’ll be requested to sign the adoption form.
  7. After you’ve brought your new canine friend home, the adoption centre or shelter will check in periodically to ensure that he’s settling in well!
Different adoption centres and shelters may adopt a slightly different process. For more information, you’re advised to contact your preferred centre or shelter.

Deciding to Adopt a Dog in Singapore

While the cost of adopting a dog is lower than purchasing one from a pet shop, the commitment and costs of raising him are the same.

Therefore, it’s important to ensure that you have the time, energy and finances necessary to care for your fur friend before adopting him!

What is the 3 3 3 rule for rescue dogs?

Whether you rescue an older dog or a puppy, a lot of dogs tend to follow the 3-3-3 rule when getting acclimated: 3 days of feeling overwhelmed and nervous. 3 weeks of settling in. 3 months of building trust and bonding with you.

Why is it so hard to get a dog from a rescue?

Given that rescue dogs come from more difficult backgrounds, they often require specific living requirements and specialist care that the average aspiring dog owner, through no fault of their own, is unable to provide, making the adoption process very hard.

What is the difference between a rescue dog and a shelter dog?

What Is an Animal Rescue? Animal rescues are similar to animal shelters in that they protect unhoused animals. However, they're volunteer-run and supported because they don't get government funding. Instead of public buildings with kennels, rescues run out of private homes.
