To apply for a certificate, visit the Certificate of Conduct and Non-Criminal Fingerprint section at One Police Plaza in lower Manhattan. The office is open Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 3 PM. Processing hours are 7 AM to 2 PM. 

You must submit a $50 money order or certified check with your application. The money order or check should be made payable to New York City Police Department.

Credit and debit cards are also accepted but debit cards must have a Visa or Master Card logo. You must also provide valid identification. Processing normally takes approximately 10 working days.

Required Documentation

Accepted types of documentation and identification required for obtaining a Certificate of Conduct are listed below. Documents must be original. No document photocopies, pictures of documents or laminated documents will be accepted. All documents must be intact.  

U.S. Citizen

U.S. Citizens are required to submit the following documents when applying for a Certificate of Conduct. No document photocopies will be accepted.

  • Valid US Passport, or
  • Original U.S. birth certificate AND a valid U.S. driver's license or DMV identification card, or IDNYC (New York City identification card) or
  • Voter's registration card AND a valid driver’s license or DMV identification card, or IDNYC (New York City identification card) or
  • Naturalization certificate

Non-U.S. Citizen

Non-U.S. Citizens are required to submit the following documents when applying for a Certificate of Conduct: 

  • Valid passport or Alien Registration Card or Employment Authorization Card, or
  • Current letter from the Department of Homeland Security (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) indicating the applicant's name, address, alien registration number and current status in this country AND a valid U.S. driver's license or DMV identification card (issued in USA) photo identification, or IDNYC (New York City identification card) or
  • Letter from the applicant's consulate or an attorney that contains the applicant's full physical description and date of birth AND valid U.S. driver’s license or DMV identification card (issued in USA) or IDNYC (New York City identification card)

    A New York Certificate of Good Standing (Status) for a domestic entity includes the following elements:

    • The date of filing articles of incorporation/date of organization
    • For an LLC - A statement that no cancellation has been filed, and that the limited liability company is authorized to exercise all its powers and privileges and is in good legal standing.
    • For a Corporation - That there is no record that the corporation has been dissolved or that corporation's existence has been terminated by merger and that, according to the records of Secretary of State, the corporation is authorized to exercise all its rights and privileges and is in good legal standing in New York.

    A New York Certificate of Good Standing (Status) for a foreign entity includes the following elements:

    • State of organization /Domestic state
    • Entity name
    • Date of registration
    • For an LLC - A statement that its registration has not been canceled; and a statement that it is entitled to transact business in New York, subject to any licensing requirements
    • For a Corporation – That the corporation is authorized to transact business in New York, and that corporation is in good legal standing in New York

    What is a Certificate of Status?

    A Certificate of Status is a state-issued document that proves your business exists and has maintained compliance with all state requirements, such as filing annual reports and paying franchise taxes. Some states refer to this document as a "Certificate of Good Standing", a “Certificate of Existence” or a “Certificate of Authorization”.

    When do you need a Certificate of Status?

    How to Get a New York Certificate of Good Standing

    A certificate of good standing from the Secretary of State is called a Certificate Under Seal or a Certificate of Existence. You can order by fax, mail or in person, but we recommend faxing. Normal processing takes up to 3 days, plus additional time for mailing, and costs $25. Expedited service is available for $50 or more and should take less than 24 business hours, plus additional time for mailing.

    In the State of New York a Certificate of Good Standing may also mean verification of the current status of an attorney within a given appellate district.     Requests by mail will be expedited only if paying the additional fee. You will want to provide the business name, payment or credit card authorization form, return address information, specific request and a daytime phone number for any questions.

    By Fax:

    In Person:

    Requested documents are processed normally, unless expedited fees are requested paid. You will want to have your payment handy.

    How much does a New York Certificate of Good Standing cost?

    To register as a New York Corporation.

    $25 for normal processing.
    $50 for 24 hour expedited processing.
    $100 for same day expedited processing.
    $175 for 2 hour expedited processing.

    Is expedited processing available?

    Yes. An expedited service fee of $25 is required for 24 hour processing, $75 for same day processing, or $150 for 2 hour processing, in addition to the regular $25 fee. Same day expedited service requests must be received by noon. Requests for 2 hour service must be received by 2:30 pm. Expedited service fees are non-refundable.

    How will the Certificate of Good Standing come back after I order from the New York Department of State?

    It will be mailed by regular mail, unless you request otherwise, and provide authorization to charge the shipping fees to your credit card or by providing a pre-addressed prepaid envelope or Fed Ex airbill. Return service by UPS, fax or email is not available.

    How long does it take to get a certificate of Good Standing from New York?

    A: This process must be initiated at the State Board of Law Examiners website. Click on the link for Admission on Motion/Reciprocity. This process has several steps, which all happen automatically once initiated at the above website. Estimated time for the entire process is between four and six months.

    Is a certificate of Good Standing required in NY?
