"I Want to Write You a Song" is the twelfth track on Made in the A.M. It was globally released on November 13, 2015. Lyrically, the song is literal. It describes what type of song the narrator would like to write for someone they love, and features pen writing sound effects in the background. BackgroundThe song was written by Ammar Malik, John Ryan and Julian Bunetta. Songwriter Julian Bunetta said of the song "This one has one of [my favorite] lines. It's so simple. I think that one of the best lines on the album is in that song. Personally."[1] Liam wished he'd written the track himself, stating "I’ve always tried to write that song for a special person but you never quite get up to your own expectations, [because] you want it to be your best piece of work ever. That song’s actually about the moment you try to write someone a song and not knowing what the hell to write about. I love that. Made me feel like, ‘Damn, I wish I was there when that happened.“[2] Lyrics
