As far as high-end, luxury mattress brands go, Stearns & Foster is one of the most well-recognized names in the industry. The company competes with both big-name, in-store brands like Sealy Posturepedic and Beautyrest, as well as online brands like Logan & Cove. For the purposes of our review, we tested one of the brand’s most popular mattresses, the Kirkland Signatures by Stearns & Foster Hope Bay. This mattress is made in the USA and retails at $1,000 USD / $1,150 CAD for a queen. Stearns & Foster Mattress: Company Overview

Back in 1846, Stearns & Foster was a cotton goods manufacturer who specialized in horse carriage upholstery. However, despite the brand’s decidedly non-mattress beginnings, the company eventually transitioned into hotel mattress manufacturing and then ultimately into the higher-end consumer mattress sector. Today, Stearns & Foster mattresses can be found both online as well as in stores like The Brick, Hudson’s Bay, and Costco, among others.

Stearns & Foster Mattress: Delivery, Sleep Trial, Returns

As a general rule of thumb, Stearns & Foster mattress delivery times will depend on the retailer stock availability and delivery schedules. The model we used for the purposes of our review – Kirkland Signatures Hope Bay – was bought from Costco.

A common method of delivery for mattress retailers is what’s known as a “white glove” delivery. This means that the mattress will be taken to the room it’s supposed to be set up in, placed on the bed frame, and then the packaging will be removed. However, because not all retailers will arrange the removal of the old mattress, buyers may still have to do some preparation before the delivery day.

Many mattresses come with a sleep trial period which is basically a satisfaction guarantee that allows buyers to try the mattress at home for a set time period during which the mattress can be returned. The specifics of these policies are ultimately at the discretion of the retailer.

In the case of the Hope Bay mattress, we found that the sleep trial period was 90 days. It should be noted, however, that Mattress-Reviews.com did not initiate the return process but instead spoke with customer service to receive an answer.

Stearns & Foster Mattress: Construction

The Kirkland Signatures by Stearns & Foster Hope Bay is a pillow-top spring-and-foam hybrid mattress. Using a combination of foam and coils, this mattress offers fairly good support and a reasonable amount of cooling. 

The Hope Bay is only available in king or queen size and has only one firmness option. This one-size-fits-all approach is quite common among mattress manufacturers.

Stearns & Foster Mattress Layers

The Stearns & Foster mattress contains five layers of foam and coils. Collectively, these layers work together to provide greater support and comfort.

• Pillow-top layer: 1.5 inches of quilting and cloth materials.

• First layer: 1 inch of cooling foam. This top layer of foam helps to ensure that buyers are able to sleep at night without overheating.

• Second layer: 1 inch of foam. This layer of foam provides extra softness.

• Third layer: 1 inch of foam. This layer further enhances the support the mattress provides.

• Fourth layer: 7.5 inches of pocketed coils. These coils make the mattress firmer and more supportive. In addition, the coils enhance motion isolation and, due to the way this mattress is constructed, they also aid in promoting better edge support.

Of note: Additional foam layers are also part of the construction of the mattress, particularly below the spring layer. Taken with the layers already discussed above, these would account for the mattress’ overall height of 14.5 inches.

The Hope Bay mattress’ pillow-top is decorated with a white, textured pattern on top and dark brown upholstery along the sides. The mattress sports a lighter shade of brown along the sidewalls that’s punctuated with dark straps that serve as adjustment handles. Overall, the cover design is simple and effective.

The Stearns & Foster Hope Bay mattress from Costco has a special appeal to buyers who are looking for quality, support, and breathability and who aren’t afraid to pay a little more for it. To that end, this mattress is very firm; it makes liberal use of temperature-regulating elements, and had very decent scores on our edge support and motion isolation tests.

Even so, there’s reason to believe that customers may not be getting full value considering the higher price point. The lack of free shipping, the relatively short manufacturer’s warranty, the lack of size options, and the objectively average to below-average scores for this mattress all suggest that buyers may want to comparison shop with this one. That being said, those who value a mattress on the firmer end will likely get the most enjoyment from the Stearns & Foster Hope Bay mattress.
