Please try again later.Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2012 There are very few books that leave me scratching my head this much, and this is one of them. I have lots of calculus under my belt, and I love it. Statistics is an equally interesting interesting area of mathematics, and I can really see myself applying it when I begin my engineering career. This book, however, makes it difficult for me to grasp even the most simple of concepts, because the author spends so little time actually defining them. He will also often switch up on notation without actually explaining what any of the variables mean. Maybe right now you're thinking "No biggie, I'll just buy the solutions manual!" Bad idea. The solutions manual offers minimal explanation for many problems. While some of the problems are explained sufficiently, some are not. And the kicker? Some of the problems make references to theorems that don't even exist in the book! Even more don't even answer the question that was asked in the first place! It is very obvious that whoever performed the final review of this text, before sending it to the press, did not take the time to make sure a first-time statistics student would be able to learn from this book. Make no mistake: this isn't an introductory text; this is a REVIEW text. If this was sold as a review text, I wouldn't even be currently reviewing it. But because this says "Introduction" in the title then, in my opinion, this qualifies as false advertisement. 0/5. I don't like having my time and money wasted. I would be more forgiving in this review were it not for the simple fact that this book is currently in its fifth edition, the first being published back in 1981. The author has had THIRTY YEARS to get his act together. I have the class with Prof. Marx himself, and it is the best textbook I've ever used. Not only helpful, but candid, entertaining, and full of informative studies and anecdotes. This book is terrible from the way that it is written to the way that the author uses obscure terminology and poor wording. If you have to read this for a Ph.D. Program (as I did) you may be better off dropping out of classes and going to live among the wolves in the forest using this book for sustenance and fuel through the darkest nights of winter than remaining in a class that uses this nightmare come reality of a book which explains absolutely nothing and expects you to understand what the author meant perfectly 3 chapters before.
