News They're Playing Our Song, Directed by Randolph-Wright, Begins in Brazil A production of Marvin Hamlisch and Neil Simon's They're Playing Our Song — Esta é a nossa canção — begins performances at the Theater Maison de France in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 4. The production, which is open-ended, is helmed by two American artists: director Charles Randolph-Wright (Mama I Want to Sing, Dreamgirls) and choreographer Ken Roberson (Avenue Q, All Shook Up, Drowning Crow). Amanda Acosta and Tadeu Aguiar head a cast that also includes Ana Baird, Anna Bello, Carolina Futuro, Flávia Rinaldi Mauro Gorini, Pedro Henrique Lopes, Sergio Somene and Victor Maia. They're Playing Our Song features a score by Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager and a book by Neil Simon. The musical, according to press notes, "follows the stormy relationship between one famous composer and a talented, but relatively unknown, lyricist." The musical opened at Broadway's Imperial Theatre in 1979; it received four Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Song titles include "I Still Believe in Love," "Just for Tonight," "If He really Knew Me," "Working it Out," "Falling" and the title tune. The creative team for the Brazilian production also includes translators Tadeu Augiar (book) and Flavio Marinho (lyrics), musical director Liliane Secco, scenic designer Edward Monteiro, costume designer Ney Madeira, lighting designer Paulo Cesar Medeiros and sound designer Jamil Chevitarese.
