How to get rid of ice pick scars reddit

By now, I have started to believe it is a myth and that there is no REAL way of getting a clear skin unless you are born with it or have millions of dollars. All the YouTube videos are fake. I know this because I have acne PIT scars and have tried several methods but there's not been any significant improvement. I still apply one method to date - coconut oil from the last three years. I don't have acne anymore but I'll say even this method has only removed 5% of the pits/scars.

My dermatologist told me that even laser gives only 50% reduction.

So my question, is there an actual way of getting a flawless skin ? Any product/ remedy or treatment that actually works ??

Depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go, unfortunately.

Most topicals can't remove acne scars, especially old ones. Icepick scars are a lack of collagen in the skin from trauma. Definitely, and please, see a dermatologist to have them help. Also, you shouldn't really start any treatments to remove scars until you no longer have any acne.

Safest and easiest: chemical peels. Done professionally is best. If you choose to do it at home please do as much research as you can.

Professionally; laser treatments. Some medical spas do this as well.

Painful: dermarolling or derma-needling. Do NOT cut corners with this method. New and clean needles every time.

Severe and dangerous; cross section chemical/acid treatment. This is best for extremely deep boxcar or rolling box car scars and if you only have a few or one. There are some horror stories of people trying to do this at home or DIY. Really should only be done for extreme severe scars, after LOADS of research and under the supervision of an expert.

I have a couple leftover acne scars, where there's a deep depression in the skin resulting from an absence of collagen. I recently found an article suggesting that I should "needle" the scar literally poking it with a needle to stimulate collagen growth and fill the scar in naturally. So my questions are 1. is that crazy or does that actually work, and 2. do you have any other suggestions to fix a scar like that?

Well salicylic is great for acne prevention, but Glycolic acid is better at resurfacing (as well as lactic). Maybe you could try alternating between salicylic and glycolic. I like The Ordinary 7% Glycolic toner and the Pixi Glow Tonic is also recommended. And you haven't given much detail so I don't know what your routine is like now, but if you're using acids, don't forget moisturizer afterwards and SPF in the morning!

But honestly, for 3D scars acids and topical treatments can only do so much. The best option is to talk to a dermatologist about treatments like microneedling and lasers.

Yes I think your skin could benefit from microneedling. I did 4 sessions myself so far and boxcar and rolling scars reacted best. Didn’t do much on ice pick scars for me, but it’s smoothed out the skin a lot in general so they are less noticeable. So depending on skin type, scar type etc. not every single scar may disappear (learned that the hard way) but overall appearance would likely improve, at least from the scar types that are visible in your picture.

They are ish? They are so tiny though, microneedling might help finish smoothing out your skin

You can try the Ordinary's peeling solution once a week or just use a glycolic acid treatment a few times a week. If your skin is very sensitive then be careful with glycolic acid and maybe try using lactic acid first. It won't necessarily get rid of the scarring altogether but it can greatly improve the texture and appearance of your skin through resurfacing the top layer and smoothing out those crevices. Luckily, your acne scars aren't too deep so a chemical exfoliant along with a retinoid like Adapalene or Tretinoin can make inroads. I'd also suggest looking into microneedling or a laser treatment for quicker more noticeable improvements.

Thank you! Yeah the shallowness kinda confused me.

Is it ok to use a chemical exfoliant with a retinoid?

I think I'll start with OTC remedies and then go in for a procedure! Thank you!
