Why was my Instagram account disabled?

There are many reasons why an Instagram account gets disabled, and moderators will often strike without any warning. Instagram doesn’t give us clarity on why accounts are disabled, but it does say that it results from violating community guidelines or terms of use.

Here are some possible reasons why your Instagram account was disabled:

  • You have performed some illegal activities such as buying or selling dark stuff
  • Hate speech in the comments/posts
  • Posts which have nudity
  • Posts which signify graphic violence
  • Using third-party apps to access Instagram

One of the easiest methods to recover your disabled Instagram account is by submitting an appeal to Instagram with your details. However, do note that you can only submit this appeal up to 30 days from the day your account was disabled. After 30 days, your account will be permanently deleted. And usually, you can only recover your account if it was disabled by mistake.

In order to speed up the process, you can appeal in 3 different formats, two of which are forms, and one is via an email to Instagram support.

Recover your account by submitting appeal forms

  • Fill out the first form by following this link. Fill in all the details such as your full name, email address, mobile number, and Instagram ID, as well as an explanation as to why you think your account has been disabled by mistake.
  • Fill out the second form by following this link. Select your account type whether it is used to represent a business or not. Keep in mind if you select yes, you will have to prove that you are a legitimate business by uploading relevant documents.

Recover your account by sending an email

Once you have sent both of these forms, follow these steps:

  • Send an email to the Instagram support team ()
  • Explain the reasons why you think your account has been disabled by mistake. Don’t use stuff like “I’m sorry, I won’t do it again”, as this will mean you are admitting to wrongdoing, and you may never get your account back.

Recover your account by using the Instagram app

If you find the above two steps tedious, you can also use the Instagram app:

  • Try to Log in to the Instagram app
  • Now an on-screen prompt will pop up saying your account is disabled. Tap on ‘Learn More’ and follow the on-screen instructions to recover your account.

How to recover my Instagram account if it is deactivated?

If you have temporarily deactivated your account in the past, and if you want to get back to the ‘gram again, it is pretty simple:

  • Launch the Instagram app on your device.
  • On the login screen, enter your Instagram username and password associated with the account you wish to reactivate.
  • Tap ‘Login’ and you’re done. This should restore your Instagram account.
