Method 1 – Look in Settings

Go to Settings > General > About. To the right of ‘Model Number’ you’ll see the part number. To see the model number, tap the number shown in the picture.

Method 2 – Look on your device

If you can’t check your settings because the phone is locked, or the screen is broken, you can check on the device itself. On recent iPhones (iPhone 8 and above) the model number is visible inside the SIM card slot. You’ll need to remove the SIM card to view the model. The model number is on the upper side – the display side. You may need a bright light and your glasses – the writing is pretty small!

Step 4: Take note of the Model Name as seen on the right, and now you know specifically which iPhone you have.

Please note that older iPhones will only display the Model Number and not the Model Name. If this is your case, see the section below on how you can identify your iPhone.

Apple has released many iPhones. Yes, some — like the iPhone X and later — are more distinctive than others, but it’s not always obvious whether you have an iPhone 7 or an iPhone 6. This is especially true if you didn’t happen to buy your iPhone yourself.

Finding out model number on About page

If you want to find out which iPhone you have, you can simply go to Settings > General > About.

The About page gives you general info about your iPhone. It details the version of iOS you’re running, the storage capacity, and the model number. Also, if your iPhone is running iOS 12.2 or later, you can see your iPhone’s model name. This means that if you have an iPhone 5S or later, you should be able to see the model name without having to check anywhere else.

However, if you have an iPhone 5 or earlier, you won’t be able to upgrade to iOS 12.2. By extension, you won’t be able to see your iPhone model name within Settings. Nonetheless, you can still find out your iPhone’s model number. Once again, make sure you’ve navigated to Settings > General > About.

On the About screen, select the number on the right of the Model Number. That number typically starts with an M or N. After you choose it, you’ll see a number beginning with A. It’s that second number, the one beginning with an A, that is your iPhone’s model number. The model number can help symbolize which generation iPhone you own. Check over the list below to match your number to a corresponding iPhone iteration.

One of the most direct ways to find your phone’s model number is to flip your phone around and check out the model number etched on the back. As we previously mentioned, A is the first character on all model numbers. It could help to compare the model number to the model number shown in the software settings to ensure the two match up— especially before you try selling your phone.

How do you find out what model an iPhone is without setting it up?

You'll find your iPhone's 'A' model number stamped on the back of your device. Flip it over, and then look for the “Model AXXXX" identifier. It'll be in fine print below the “iPhone” label.

How do I find my iPhone model by IMEI?
