How does a group order work on doordash

DoorDash is now allowing users to order delivery from multiple businesses at once.

With the new feature, called DoubleDash, diners can order dinner from a restaurant and dessert from a convenience store nearby. All of it will be delivered together, the company said, with no additional delivery fee.

DoubleDash will only be an option for certain orders—likely those that make logistical sense for one driver to handle. It was unclear whether restaurants will be able to opt in to participate in DoubleDash.

It works like this: A customer places a delivery order with a restaurant on DoorDash. After checking out, a pop-up appears asking if they would like to use DoubleDash to add items from another nearby business. From there, they can add more items to their original order, all of which will de dispatched to the driver.

DoubleDash is currently available at 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Wawa, QuickChek, virtual ice cream brand The Ice Cream Shop and DoorDash's DashMart convenience hubs. In some markets, the company is testing the ability for customers to order from two restaurants at once. 

The feature should give consumers more convenient access to the wide variety of products now available on DoorDash. It also makes economic sense for the company because it will in theory yield larger orders.

For Señor G's Fresh & Healthy Mexican Food, DoubleDash is an opportunity to "reach new customers and drive additional sales" at the Playa Del Rey, Calif., restaurant, said owner Benjamin Arreola in a statement.

The company hinted that the logistics of DoubleDash might be more complex than they appear. In a news release announcing the initiative, DoorDash warned in a disclaimer that "deliveries may arrive separately."

In April, Uber Eats launched a similar feature as part of its Get and Go initiative.
