The annual America’s Greatest Heart Run & Walk fundraiser for the American Heart Association will return in-person Saturday, May 7, starting off at Accelerate Sports in Whitesboro. The goal for this year's event is $750,000. Last year's fundraising walk/run was held virtually, with some 500 participants raising $479,000, said Katherine McCarthy, the American Heart Association's senior director of communications for the Capital Region, Upper Hudson Valley and Mohawk Valley. 2021 Heart Run & Walk:America’s Greatest Heart Run & Walk raises $425k to fight heart disease Participants in the event will be able to walk 3 miles, or run 5 miles, starting any time they wish between 8:30 a.m. and noon. The route will incorporate parts of the Accelerate Sports grounds and parks in Whitesboro and Oriskany. People also can walk or run on their corporate campuses or in their own neighborhoods. Birnie Bus will transport participants to the start of the event, with pickup locations to be determined. Registered participants will receive route maps. This year’s Red Cap Ambassadors, all survivors of heart disease, are John Nogas, who survived a heart attack in 2019; Ryan Leogrande, who, after watching himself flatline in the hospital, made lifestyle changes and lost 100 pounds; and Tara Davis, who has Down Syndrome and had open-heart surgery as an infant and is now 36. The logo for the 2022 event was chosen by public vote and designed by Amber Matys, a student at PrattMWP College of Art & Design in Utica.
