ABSTRACT: There is an increasing trend to consider complementary ways of combining quantitative and qualitative assessment. Furthermore, there is a growing awareness of the need to revise psychological measures on a regular basis. This article attempts to address both these trends and uses a child development measure, the Griffiths III, as an illustration of how this can be accomplished. The outcome proposes a potential six step revision process.

Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research

Artikelomschrijving

Authors John W. Creswell and Vicki L. Plano Clark walk readers through the entire research process, from formulating questions to designing, collecting data, and interpreting results and include updated examples from published mixed methods studies drawn from the social, behavioural, health, and education disciplines. New to the Third Edition is a focus now on three core mixed methods designs, plus their application (in a new Chapter 4) to four additional methodological approaches: intervention trials; case studies; participatory-social justice designs; and program evaluations. Also included is expanded discussion throughout on integration of quantitative and qualitative data and results; more attention to the use of theory in mixed methods research; discussion of current advances with mixed methods research and suggested techniques and strategies that might make a mixed methods study more sophisticated and state-of-the-art; and a new conclusion that pulls together the key elements of the core designs from the standpoint of incorporating all of the steps in the process of research: the final chapter now summarizes the entire process in one table.

A practical, how-to guide to designing mixed methods studies.

Combining the latest thinking about mixed methods research designs with practical, step-by-step guidance, the Second Edition of Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research now covers six major mixed methods designs. Authors John W. Creswell and Vicki L. Plano Clark walk readers through the entire research process, from formulating questions to designing, collecting data, and interpreting results and include updated examples from published mixed methods studies drawn from the social, behavioral, health, and education disciplines.

New to This Edition:

* Two new mixed methods designs--transformative and multiphase--are now covered.

* New flowcharts detail the steps involved in conducting each of the six major mixed methods designs.

* More detailed coverage of data collection decisions for each of the six major designs.

* New topic coverage

- The use of joint displays

- Emerging discussion about validity

- Newest thinking about the use of software in the process of mixed methods analysis

* An example of a mixed method dissertation outline is now included in the set of guidelines for reporting mixed methods research in a proposal, dissertation, or journal article.

* New and revised activities and exercises conclude each chapter.

This text is intended for use in Intermediate/Advanced Research Methods, Mixed Methods, Research Design, and Social Research Methods courses across the social sciences.

What research design is used in mixed method research?

Mixed methods research comprises different types of design categories, including explanatory, exploratory, parallel and nested (embedded) designs.

How does John W Creswell define research?

Another definition of research is given by John W. Creswell, who states that "research is a process of steps used to collect and analyze information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue".

What is research design according to Cresswell?

(Creswell, 2014) explains “Research design are the specific procedure involved in the research process: data collection, data analysis, and report writing”. The research design in this research uses analysis research design.
