In this post, we share with you the Bissell ProHeat 2x troubleshooting guide. Whether your Bissell ProHeat 2x brushes are not spinning or the machine is not spraying, we’ve got the solution for you.

You can jump to a specific problem and its solution by using the quick navigation tab.

1. Bissell ProHeat 2x brushes not spinning

The Bissell ProHeat 2X brushes will only turn when the handle is reclined. Remove the clean water tank and recline the handle. Turn the machine on and view the brushes from the front to verify they're spinning.

If the Bissell ProHeat 2x brushes are not spinning or turning, there are 4 reasons why:

  • A foreign object got caught in the brushes
  • The brushes are damaged
  • The belts are damaged
  • The belts are not intact (not fitted properly)

If the brushes are not spinning, the first thing you would want to do is to inspect the brushes for stuck objects. Turn off and unplug the machine. Remove both the water tank and the formula tank, and set them aside.

Unscrew and remove the front nozzle, and set it aside.

Turn the machine on its side, making sure the cord side is down. Remove the clear end cap by unscrewing the two black screws, taking extra care to not drop the screws into the unit.

Remove one silver screw, and remove the pivot arm by gently lifting up on the arm. At this point, you have access to the brushes, which can be removed for cleaning or can be replaced with new brushes.

Clean the brushes thoroughly, making sure to remove anything that may hinder them from spinning properly. Tangled items such as pet hair, carpet fibers, or dust buildup should be removed.

If the brushes are clean but they are still not spinning, you need to inspect the belts and make sure they are intact. The shorter belt (pump belt), is on the non-cord side of the machine and hooks over the metal motor pulley. The longer belt of the two (brush belt) is on the cord-side and connects the two brushes together.

Both the brushes and the belts may also need replacement.

How to replace Bissell ProHeat 2x belts and brushes

The Bissell ProHeat 2x is a durable upright carpet deep cleaner that rarely needs maintenance. However, occasional replacement of one or both belts, and the roller brushes may be necessary.

Here is a thorough and helpful video, explaining each step in detail:

Before replacing the Bissell ProHeat 2x belts or brush rolls, buy the replacement parts:

Once you have the parts, let's start. To begin the brush replacement process, start by turning off the machine and unplugging it from the outlet. Remove both the water tank and the formula tank and set them aside.

Now, you can remove and replace the small brush belt. At this point, you also have access to the brushes, which can be removed for cleaning or can be replaced with new brushes.

  1. First, remove the brush rolls by pulling off of the metal rods.
  2. Next, place cleaned or new brush rolls back onto the rods. Make sure one washer is on each end of the rollers prior to sliding them onto the rod, and be sure to let the rod slide through the bushing to ensure proper fit.
  3. Reattach the long belt on the bottom to the bottom of the cogs of the small roller brushes.
  4. Place the small belt over the back roller and metal cog.
  5. Place the pivot arm in position, and screw it in place using the silver screw.
  6. Next, reattach the clear end cap by tightening the two black screws.

Finally, return the nozzle to the front of the unit by latching it underneath, and securing it with the screw. Now, your Bissell ProHeat 2x is ready for use and the brushes should spin and turn correctly.

2. Bissell ProHeat 2x not spraying

Are you having a problem with your Bissell ProHeat 2x not spraying? First, make sure you only use Bissell deep cleaning machine formulas in your machine. If the Bissell ProHeat 2x is not spraying, there are 5 reasons why:

  • The inline filter is clogged.
  • The tank assembly is not properly assembled.
  • The autoload gaskets are stuck or missing.
  • Something is wrong with the dirty water tank.
  • The spray tips are clogged.

Here is a thorough and helpful video for troubleshooting each step:

1. Clear the inline filter

Some Bissell machines, including the ProHeat 2x, are equipped with an inline filter. Remove the tank and set it aside, then use a coin to take off the red cap. Next, pull out the white filter. Rinse the white filter and put it back into the unit, making sure it is in place. Screw the red cap back into place.

2. Assemble the tank assembly correctly

Next, let’s check the tank assembly.

Confirm that the tank lid is properly attached to the tank bottom. Hook the nozzle into the groove at the front of the tank bottom and secure the lid with the gray latch at the back of the tank.

If the tank lid and bottom do not separate when lifted by the handle, the tank is properly assembled and can be placed on the base of the Bissell ProHeat 2x unit for cleaning use.

3. Make sure the autoload gaskets are not stuck or missing

Next, you would need to make sure the autoload gaskets are not stuck or missing.

Check the bottom of both the water tank and the SmartMix formula bottle to make sure each has a red rubber autoload gasket attached and facing outward. If either gasket is missing, check for it in the base of the Bissell ProHeat 2x machine to make sure it is not stuck.

If the gaskets are down in the base of the unit, remove them using a flathead screwdriver or a pair of pliers and then reattach them to the water tank to the formula bottle.

After this step, check to see if any spray is coming out of the foot in the hose.

4. Inspect the x-valve

If there is still no spray, you can evaluate the x-valve. With hot tap water in both tanks, hold it over a sink and press upward on the x-valve. If the tanks release water, go to the next step.

If water doesn’t flow to the valve, the cap and insert will need to be replaced (buy on Amazon).

5. Inspect the dirty water tank

To check the dirty water collection tank, you will need to remove it. Here’s how:

  1. Make sure the unit is set to water rinse.
  2. Take out the SmartMix bottle, and fill it with water only.
  3. Then, place the SmartMix bottle into the dirty water collection tank reservoir.
  4. Run the unit and try to spray on the floor to the hose, then the floor.
  5. If the unit sprays through the hose, there is something wrong with the dirty water tank, and you will need a new dirty water tank.

If there is still no spray, please proceed to the next step, which may resolve the lack of spray. However, this may take some time to complete. If you don’t have time or do not feel comfortable disassembling your Bissell ProHeat 2x machine further, it’s best to take it to a Bissell authorized service center for repair.

6. Remove and unclog the spray tips

Next, you will need to remove the spray tips to test if water comes out of the spray line.

With the clean water tank assembly off of the unit, and the solution tank on the front of the base, pop the red or white spray tip on the right side out of the base of the machine.

To remove the spray tab, pinch the plastic tabs on its top. While you are pinching those spray tip tabs, use a flathead screwdriver to raise the spray tip and waterline out of the base of the machine.

Next, pinch the metal hose clamp with a pair of pliers. Then slide it back to relieve pressure so the red or white spray tip can be removed. Be sure to leave the metal hose clamp on the hose.

Now stretch the waterline out of the machine, and lay the towel under it. Make sure the solution bottle is placed where the clean water tank plugs into the base. Turn the SmartMix dial to water rinse. Then turn the machine on and press the trigger. If it sprays, repeat these steps with the left spray tip.

You can clean the spray tip by using a paperclip to push through the hole to clear any debris. Rinse the spray tip out with warm water. Then, insert the spray tip back into the hose and check for spray.

If the spray tip is still clogged, remove and repeat the last steps, then soak the spray tips in a cup of hot tap water for 10 to 15 minutes to loosen any buildup. You can use the paperclip to push through the hole again.

If you still don’t see any spray after the spray tips are clean or have been replaced, it may be best to take your Bissell ProHeat 2x to a Bissell authorized service center for repair at this time.

3. Formula not spraying through the hose

Is your Bissell ProHeat 2x spraying formula to the floor but not through the hose?

If there is no spray moving through the hose, remove the tool on the end of the hose and then check for spray again. If the hose sprays when the attachment is not connected, then the tool is clogged.

Try cleaning out the spray tip on the tool with a paperclip.

If there is still no spray after the tool has been cleaned, it may need to be replaced. If the hose does not spray with the tool removed, clean the spray connector on the hose itself with a paperclip. You can also stretch the hose out and give it a few light tugs to release any kinks in the internal water supply hose.

4. Bissell ProHeat 2x has no suction

There are a number of ways to troubleshoot Bissell ProHeat 2x suction trouble to get your machine working properly again. Whether it’s the Bissell ProHeat 2x Revolution or Turbo, there is a simple fix. Before troubleshooting, please turn the power off and unplug the machine from the outlet.

Here are 8 reasons why Bissell ProHeat 2x has no suction and its solutions:

  • The tanks (dirty water tank and clean water tank) are not seated properly - Make sure your tanks are seated properly on the machine. Pick up both tanks and reseat them properly on the unit.
  • The dirty water tank is full - The Bissell ProHeat 2x won’t suction if the dirty water tank is full. Empty your dirty water tank if the maximum amount of dirty water has been picked up and has reached the fill line.
  • The clean water tank is empty - If your clean water tank is empty, check fluid levels in the clean water tank. Refill if the clean water tank is empty.
  • Your dirty water tank may not be secured tightly - Check the rubber tab on the dirty water tank and press firmly on all edges to secure it tightly.
  • The accessory hose door is not closed securely - The Bissell ProHeat 2x won’t suction if the accessory hose door is not closed securely. Check the door and make sure it is locked in place.
  • The red filter (motor duct) is full of debris - Make sure there is no pet hair or debris on the red motor duct. Wipe the red filter and clear debris regularly.
  • The nozzle may be clogged - Remove the nozzle from the foot. Flip the accessory door open and lift up on the nozzle and accessory hose door. Hold the nozzle and insert the nozzle clean-out tool into the thin slot on the end of the nozzle that touches the floor. Clean until free of pet hair or debris. Return the nozzle back to the foot of the machine. Line up the three hooks on the nozzle to the bottom of the foot. Rotate the nozzle up and click into place and close the accessory hose door.
  • The brush rolls are tangled - If the brush rolls are tangled with pet hair or carpet fibers, the machine will have low suction. Remove hair and debris from the brush rolls with the clean-out tool.

5. Bissell ProHeat 2x is continuously spraying

If your Bissell ProHeat 2x is continuously spraying, the trigger may be damaged and need repair. Press the trigger on the handle several times. If the trigger springs back, press the trigger down and hold it down for 30 seconds, then press and unpress the trigger several times. This should solve the issue.

If the trigger does not spring back or your Bissell ProHeat 2x is still continuously spraying, you need to visit a Bissell authorized service center for a repair. You can also contact Bissell for further help.

6. Bissell ProHeat 2x is leaking

To verify if your Bissell ProHeat 2x is leaking, leave it in the same spot for 30 seconds, then

move the machine to a new spot. Is there a significant puddle under where the machine was sitting? If your Bissell ProHeat 2x Revolution is leaking water from the bottom, here’s what you can do:

  • Inspect the clean water tank for cracks or damage - Remove and fill the clean water tank. Check the clean water tank for warping, cracks, or other damage. If damaged, buy a new clean water tank.
  • Inspect the dirty water tank for cracks or damage - Remove the dirty water tank and empty it if it’s full. Check it for warping, cracks, or other damage. If damaged, buy a new dirty water tank.
  • Inspect bottom of the dirty tank - Make sure the inner stack is attached properly. The arrows should line up and the collar should be screwed in place. Check the nut to ensure it's fully tightened.
  • Inspect the cap and inserts on the clean water tank and formula tank - Unscrew and replace the cap and inserts on the clean tank and formula tank on your machine. Make sure the gasket at the bottom of the clean tank is working properly and water is only coming out when the valve is pushed upward. If the red rubber auto load gasket is missing, check to see if it's stuck in the reservoir. If the red rubber auto load gasket is damaged, buy a new one.

7. Bissell ProHeat 2x has no power (won’t turn on)

If your Bissell ProHeat 2x has no power and won’t turn on, the cord or the plug may be damaged. Turn off and unplug the machine. Run your hand along the entire length of the power cord, it should be smooth with no exposed wires. Also, check the plug (prongs) for damage.

If the cord or the plug is damaged, you need to contact Bissell and get them replaced.

Alternatively, your electrical outlet may not be working. Test this by plugging in a cell phone charger or small appliance to the outlet. If there is no power to the outlet, test a different outlet in a separate room. Check your circuit breaker to see if it tripped. Reset the circuit breaker if needed.
