Ford Mustang Versus the Competition

Ford Mustang vs. Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro is the Mustang’s longtime rival. While these two iconic muscle cars have many similarities, the Ford sits comfortably above the Chevy in our sports car rankings . The Mustang has more powerful engines throughout its lineup, as well as a more refined interior, better outward visibility, a larger trunk, and more standard safety features. Both of these cars rate well for handling, but you might find the Chevy a little livelier.

Ford Mustang vs. Dodge Challenger

Believe it or not, the Dodge Challenger has not one, but two models more powerful than any Mustang. While the Shelby GT500 cranks out up to 760 horses, the Challenger has SRT models that make 797 and 807 horsepower. But while the Mustang can’t match the Challenger’s power, it’s far more nimble and fun to drive on winding roads. Both cars have quality interiors and user-friendly features, but the Challenger has a larger trunk and much roomier rear seats.

Mustang Performance: He-Man-Like Power

Mustang Engine

You have plenty of engine options with the Mustang. It comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 310 or 330 horsepower, depending on the model. You can upgrade to a beefy 460- or 480-horsepower V8, or you can step all the way up to the GT500 model, which features a supercharged V8 pumping out 760 horsepower.

Depending on the engine you select, you can pick between a six-speed manual transmission, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, or a 10-speed automatic.

The standard turbocharged engine delivers good acceleration but feels less powerful under hard throttle. The V8 engines are much more muscular, and all of the transmission options are impressive and refined.

Mustang Gas Mileage

Fuel economy ratings for the 2022 Mustang are not yet available. However, they’re expected to be largely identical to the 2021 model’s ratings, which we discuss here.

With its base turbo-four engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission, the Mustang fastback gets up to 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Those estimates are better than anything that rival muscle cars can muster, but they're in line with other four-cylinder-powered sports cars.

Swap in the manual transmission for the automatic or a convertible for a fastback – or if you opt for the boosted horsepower – estimates will drop to as low as 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

V8-powered Mustang GT models get 16/25 mpg with the automatic transmission and 15/24 mpg with the manual. The Shelby GT500 is one of the least fuel-efficient vehicles we review, coming in at 12/18 mpg city/highway.

Mustang Ride and Handling

The Mustang is an excellent driving machine. It provides a smooth ride, and you can have plenty of fun behind the wheel thanks to adept handling, well-weighted steering, and sturdy brakes.

How Fast Is the Mustang?

The standard Mustang EcoBoost can go from zero to 60 mph in around five seconds when equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission, and it has a top speed of 121 mph.

Models with the EcoBoost High Performance package do a zero-to-60 sprint in the mid-four seconds, and an automatic-equipped Mustang GT hits 60 mph in four seconds. Both of those models have a top speed of 155 mph.

The Shelby GT500 can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, and it has a top speed of 180 mph. The Mustang Mach 1 tops out at 168 mph.

Does the Mustang Have All-Wheel Drive?

No, the Ford Mustang only comes with rear-wheel drive. Most other sports cars and the Mustang's primary rivals are RWD-only, but the Dodge Challenger is available with all-wheel drive.

How Many People Does the Mustang Seat?

The Mustang seats four people in every model except the Shelby GT500, which seats two. The standard front seats are roomy and comfortable, but the optional Recaro buckets are snug; you should test them out before buying a Mustang equipped with them. Ford launched the Mustang in 1964 at the New York World’s Fair. This first-generation Mustang was initially offered with coupe and convertible body styles, as well as a straight-six and two V8 engine options. More engines, body styles, and special editions soon followed, including the now-famous Mustang GT and Shelby GT350. The Mustang’s recipe of attractive styling, fun-to-drive handling, and affordability made it an instant hit with shoppers. This popularity also helped spawn other pony cars like the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, and Dodge Challenger.
