Both the 2022 Cadillac XT5 and 2022 Cadillac XT4 offer decent space for passengers and handsome exterior looks. Other than size, they have some significant differences. Let’s compare them. Show
2022 Cadillac XT52022 Cadillac XT5 Starting Price: $43,995 | Price yours or View listings near youAbove Average: Spacious cabin; choice of engines; optional all-wheel drive; modern design. Below Average: Bottom trim ineligible for many extras; the base engine could be stronger. Consensus: Sized somewhere between compact and midsize, the 2022 Cadillac XT5 luxury crossover offers comfort for five and a choice of engines. The base engine is a little weak, and we would suggest opting for a higher trim level. 2022 Cadillac XT4Starting Price: $35,795 | Price yours or View listings near youAbove Average: Spacious cabin; good standard features; sharp exterior design. Below Average: Single engine choice; average resale value; engine noise; wind noise; ride quality. Consensus: A luxury crossover that straddles the line between subcompact and compact, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 offers good space and sharp looks. The ride could use more refinement, and there’s a lot of engine noise under hard acceleration. XT5 vs. XT4: Compact ComfortCadillac XT5While not a true midsize, the 2022 Cadillac XT5 has plenty of space for five passengers and their cargo. Not only does it offer comfortable, usable space, but the XT5 has a sleek look, a modest grille, and a high-quality interior. We also like the sliding rear seat that can be adjusted for more rear legroom or more cargo space as needed. With no one in back, cargo space is an impressive 63 cubic feet. The base engine in the 2022 XT5 is a turbocharged 4-cylinder, and while it’s ample for getting around, we would prefer it to be a bit more powerful. We’re more fond of the 3.6-liter V6, which in the Sport model is also coupled with standard all-wheel drive, a sportier suspension, and stronger brakes. Base models are front-wheel drive, and both the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims can be equipped with all-wheel drive for $2,000 extra. Standard equipment is respectable, with keyless entry and ignition, heated and power-adjustable front seats, simulated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power tailgate. Infotainment comes from an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, satellite radio, four USB ports, Wi-Fi, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. Safety equipment comes from Cadillac’s Smart System suite, with forward collision alert, rear park assist, a Safety Alert Seat, and a following-distance indicator. We recommend stepping up to the Sport model for fun driving, or at least the Premium Luxury trim, which can not only be equipped with the V6 but a sport suspension, leather upholstery, a rear camera mirror, wireless phone charging, a sunroof, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Cadillac XT4Like its big brother the XT5, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 is not easily classified, with a size that falls between compact and subcompact. That means it’s small and maneuverable, but still has adequate space for cargo and passengers. Inside, the XT4 has decent space for passengers, with good headroom and legroom and useful cargo space given its size. There’s a bit more plastic inside than expected from a luxury nameplate, and unfortunately, the cabin can get quite loud due not only to engine noise during acceleration but road and wind noise. More bad news comes in the ride quality, which can be jittery and bumpy over uneven pavement. There’s only one engine choice in the XT4, connected to the front wheels or, optionally, all four. The turbocharged 4-cylinder makes good power, but the XT4 is not quick, with more of a relaxed level of acceleration. A 9-speed automatic transmission helps it return respectable fuel economy. Standard features are decent and include power-adjustable front seats, simulated leather upholstery, different driving modes, and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Wi-Fi, satellite radio, and two USB ports. Safety features include forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, rear park assist, a rear-seat reminder, and a Safety Alert Seat. SimilaritiesStriking styling; optional all-wheel drive; spacious cabins; warranty; NHTSA 5-Star safety. 2022 Cadillac XT5 AdvantagesChoice of engines; cargo space; more refined; smoother ride. 2022 Cadillac XT4 AdvantagesLower price; fuel economy; easier to park. Which One is Right for Me?There is much to like about the 2022 Cadillac XT5, from its luxury appointments to its roomy cabin and its choice of engines. If you want a comfortable small-to-medium luxury SUV with an optional V6, the XT5 is worth a look. While it is certainly less expensive than its big brother, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 is not the best choice in its segment. Where the XT5 offers refinement and comfort befitting a luxury vehicle, the XT4 falls short in nearly every way. Ready to buy a Cadillac XT5 or Cadillac XT4? Shop for one on sale now near you.
