I have a dumb questions...
I'm about to do my first oil/filter change on my 1997 F-150 4.6L.
I can't find where the filter is!!! Can anyone point me at it?
Thanx

Not a dumb question. It should be on the driver's side, up about midway
on the engine pointing straight toward the fender, not pointed down
where you might be able to unscrew and remove without spewing hot, dirty
oil all over your steering rack and your face. :)
You might have to get up under a crossmember to get at it. Mona's
F-150
has a round cutout in a large crossmember to get it out.
On my 4.6L Mustang, it's advantageous to put a folded sheet of newsprint
over the steering rack before attempting filter removal. Keeps the rack
clean, and of course, keep the drain pan underneath it all.
Make sure the filter you put in has a silicone anti-drainback valve.
(Motorcraft 820S works fine; some of the old 820's without silicone are
still floating around though. Don't use them if you don't have
to.)

Unless its a four wheel drive, I just have a two wheel, then it is
located in a remote location. I have read posts where they say it is
located just behind the bumper for easy access.

The oil filter on my '97 F150 Supercab is best accessible when gotten at
from behind the left front tire. It's further back on the engine than you'd
think. It makes a real mess, so I'd suggest rigging up something like a
tranny oil drain setup (up off of the ground a bit). That should catch most
of the oil before it hits the driveway.
Good luck
John

I decided to buy my first F-150 years ago after I wrecked my Grand AM, and I’ve owned nothing but F-150s ever since. I’ve owned a total of four F-150s in my lifetime, and I first laid eyes on my current Lariat in 2012 when I drove by a dealership and saw it on the lot. I knew at that moment I need...
