Tacos galore! Half-off margaritas! It must be Cinco de Mayo! That said, the holiday is about more than just eating Mexican food and throwing a party. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the
Mexican Army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the battle in east-central Mexico, outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexican troops loyal to Benito Juárez managed to defeat foreign soldiers sent by Napoleon III trying to carve out an empire in Mexican
territory, according to History.com. Cinco de Mayo is often confused with Mexico's Independence Day, which is observed on Sept. 16. Over the years, the holiday has become more popular in the United States than in Mexico, as it became more commercialized in the
1980s, according to USA Today. Beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch, Coors and Miller spent nearly $38 million during that time in Hispanic advertising that contributed to the commercialization of the holiday. Here are five places in Greater Columbus where you can join the celebration: Cinco de Mayo: What you need to know to get in the holiday spirit this year The West Side restaurant, located at 4626 W. Broad St., is hosting a fiesta complete
with food, live music, a DJ, prizes and giveaways. The party at El Barco Mexican Restaurant will last from 6-10 p.m. Another West Side restaurant, Taco Nice, is hosting its own celebration in honor of the holiday. The eatery, located at 4832 W. Broad St., is offering tequila, margarita and Corona beer specials and a DJ beginning at 5 p.m. Customers also can enter a chance to win a
shirt made in Mexico City. The Downtown bar and nightclub, located at 46 N. High St., is hosting a Latino drag party beginning at 9 p.m. The event at Palmas Tropical Escape is followed by a male revue show at 11 p.m. The Northland Mexican restaurant, located at 2171 E. Dublin Granville Road, is hosting a Cinco de Mayo fiesta featuring $5 shots all day and $6 margaritas from 12-4 p.m. Budd Dairy Food Hall, located at 1086 N. 4th St., is throwing a fiesta for Cinco de Mayo, featuring drinks such as Modelo beer and a fruity tequila shooter, according to its Facebook page. The food hall also will offer specials from restaurant Tacos Rudos. Micah Walker is the Dispatch trending reporter. Reach her
