The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), in conjunction with the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), provides travel awards to participate in the NIDDK Academic Career Development Workshop. Participants are senior residents, fellows, and junior faculty within 3 years of completion of fellowship who are interested in pursuing careers in biomedical research and/or academic medicine. Participants are also encouraged to attend the NHMA Annual Conference on March 24-27, 2022.

The NIDDK Academic Career Development Workshop will take place on Thursday and Friday, March 24-25, 2022.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Be a member of a nationally underrepresented group in biomedical or behavioral research
• Be interested in membership in the National Hispanic Medical Association
• Be a senior resident, fellow, post-doctoral scientist, or early stage investigator 
• Be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or legal permanent resident
• Not have received travel support under this announcement or similar announcement in previous years

**Applicants with federal appointments may apply; however, this program will not be able to reimburse any costs.  This includes for example (1) employees from the Veterans Administration with any level federal salary support/ percent effort or (2) trainees who are part of a joint NIH -academia training program.**

Also, award recipients must attend the entire NIDDK Academic Career Development Workshop in order to receive any reimbursement. We strongly encourage recipients to attend other NHMA conference functions.

Selection Process

The NIDDK/NHMA Travel Award Review Committee will review the applications and select awardees based on policies and provisions of the NIH governing administrative awards.

Overview

The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) is proud to announce the ​17th Annual LMSA National Conference and 49​th Annual LMSA Northeast Regional Conference, ​to be held in Philadelphia, PA on March 2-6, 2022. Programming for professional attendees will begin with LIDEReS on March 2nd. Programming for trainees will begin on March 4th.

This year’s event kicks off our 50 Years of LMSA Chapters celebration, in which we commemorate the founding of our first chapter at Harvard Medical School in 1972, under the Boricua Health Organization. Moreover, this event represents the latest product of a grassroots, student-driven movement that began in the 1960’s, aimed at improving healthcare for underserved communities in the United States. 

LMSA and its antecedent organizations were created to increase the number of Latina/o/x, Hispanic, or of Spanish Origin + (LHS+) individuals in medicine; to provide them and their peers with the educational resources and programming necessary to promote their success; and to increase access to excellent and culturally relevant healthcare for what is now the largest non-white ethnic group in the United States. LMSA’s conferences address these objectives by exposing attendees to critical issues affecting healthcare and medical education, and by providing attendees with opportunities to further develop as physicians, leaders, and advocates for the patients they serve.

Specifically, under this year’s theme, Cincuenta Años de Comunidad: Fostering Service, Health Equity, and Leadership, NC2022 will highlight ways in which our LMSA community has leveraged – and will continue to leverage – its strength to address the needs of medical trainees for the improved health of the country’s LHS+ population. We invite you to join us in our mission to increase diversity in medicine and mitigate healthcare disparities, especially during this time in which healthcare is experiencing unprecedented changes and challenges.

COVID-19 Provisions

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the U.S., LMSA is actively monitoring federal, state, local, and institutional public health guidelines to ensure a safe and successful National Conference. At this time, NC2022 will take place primarily in person. Virtual participation is discussed below.

Please note: LMSA and the venue will require all in-person attendees to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. We strongly encourage attendees to upload a copy of their Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 vaccination card during registration. Otherwise, proof of vaccination must be displayed at time of check-in. Additionally, universal masking will be required throughout NC2022, unless otherwise directed by federal, state, or local authorities.

LMSA reserves the right to refuse entry to or remove individuals who do not comply with these requirements. For those unable to travel or meet the vaccination requirement, the LMSA National Conference will offer the following options for virtual attendees:

Most in-person NC2022 activities will take place at The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton (referred to herein as the Logan Hotel). The Logan Hotel is located at 1 Logan Square, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

LMSA has secured a housing block to accommodate attendees and exhibitors at discounted rates. As of February 15, 2022, this block is at capacity and no new reservations made be made using the code GLMSA. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D. is Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He oversees NIMHD’s annual budget to advance the science of minority health and health disparities research. NIMHD conducts and supports research programs to advance knowledge and understanding of health disparities, identify mechanisms to improve minority health, and develop effective interventions to reduce health disparities in community and clinical settings. NIMHD is the lead organization at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for planning, reviewing, coordinating, and evaluating minority health and health
disparities research activities conducted by NIH. NIMHD also promotes diversity in the biomedical workforce, supports research capacity at institutions training underrepresented students and serving populations with health disparities, and promotes information dissemination through regular electronic communications, public education outreach, and scientific presentations.

Since joining NIMHD in September 2015, Dr. Pérez-Stable has been cultivating the Institute’s position on the cutting edge of the science of minority health and health disparities. Through this effort, the Institute has produced a collection of resources that guide and facilitate the conduct of research to promote health equity. We are delighted to have Dr. Pérez-Stable join us for the 2022 LMSA National Conference.

Ana Núñez, M.D., FACP, is a Professor of General Internal Medicine and Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In her role as Vice Dean, she collaborates with faculty, staff, and students across the Medical School, as well as community partners, to address issues of inequities, bias, and discrimination in clinical programs, recruiting, curriculum, and research. She has also been named as Integration Strategist, a new leadership position within the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) at the University of Minnesota, where she oversees initiatives that promote inclusive excellence across CTSI and with our communities.

Dr. Núñez received her Doctorate in Medicine from Hahnemann University and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Wilkes University. She has fellowships in medical education from Michigan State University and health services research from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

As a nationally recognized medical education and health services researcher, Dr. Núñez has developed novel curricula in the areas of sex and gender medicine, primary care, trauma/violence prevention, and cultural competence. Prior to joining the U of M, she served as the Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Drexel University College of Medicine for four years. She also served as the director for Drexel’s nationally designated Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.

The PODER Research Symposium

LMSA student members will have the opportunity to showcase their ongoing research projects at the NC2022 PODER Research Symposium, scheduled for 6-8pm Eastern on Friday, March 4, 2022.

The inaugural LMSA Promoting Opportunities for Development & Empowerment of Researchers (PODER) Program aims to connect medical trainees to opportunities for presenting, perfecting, and publishing scholarly work. In doing so, PODER seeks to empower participants for careers in which they combine research and clinical practice to address healthcare disparities.

NC2022 Gala & Closing Ceremony

Join us for our Gala at the conclusion of NC2022! This is a wonderful opportunity to congratulate our graduating medical students at they prepare to join the medical workforce as physicians. During the Gala, LMSA also announces recipients of our scholarships and awards, making the evening a fantastic celebratory event.

The Gala will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2022, starting at 8pm Eastern. The formal Gala program, lasting until 10pm, will be streamed for virtual attendees. Informal dancing, networking, and photos will continue from 10pm to 12am.
