TITLE: Meet Me in St. Louis
AUTHOR: Words by Andrew B. Sterling and music by Kerry Mills
CATEGORY: author known, public domain
KEYWORDS: love, travel, separation, abandonment, world’s fair
EARLIEST DATE: 1904 (sheet music)
HISTORICAL REFERENCES: 1904 – St. Louis Louisiana Purchase Exposition (World’s Fair).

The song Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis was written in 1904 to celebrate the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, (also known as the St. Louis World’s Fair).

The St. Louis World’s Fair opened April 30, 1904, and closed December 1 the same year. The Fair’s 1,200 acre site was located at the present-day grounds of Forest Park and on the campus of Washington University. There were over 1,500 buildings, connected by some 75 miles of roads and walkways. Exhibits were staged by 62 foreign nations and 43 of the 45 U.S. states. The Fair also hosted the 1904 Summer Olympic Games, the first held in the United States.

The 1904 World’s Fair turned out to have a great deal of cultural influence. Joe Schwarcz, [easyazon-link asin=”1550225200″ locale=”us”]That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles[/easyazon-link], notes that among the inventions popularized there were the ice cream cone (ice cream was well known, but until then it had been served mostly in dishes), the hot dog bun, peanut butter (originally designed as a protein source for those with poor or no teeth), cotton candy, and Dr. Pepper soda. Also a many great celebrities were there including John Phillip Sousa, Scott Joplin, Thomas Edison, President Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Geronimo. On of the black marks on the fair was the “human zoo.”

On of the reason I consider this a folk song is because it is in the public domain and can be changed without repercussion from those seeking copyright claims. So it is open to the folk process.

Timothy Rasinski (a professor of literacy education at Kent State University) and I participated in the folk process and added two verses for school children. (See Below)

Meet Me in St. Louis

Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

When Louis came home to the flat,
He hung up his coat and hat.
He gazed all around but no wifey he found,
So he said “Where can Flossie be at?”

A note on the table he spied,
He read it just once, then he cried
It ran, “Louis dear, it’s too slow for me here,
So I think I will go for a ride.”

Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don’t tell me the lights are shining
any place but there.
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie,
If you meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

The dresses that hung in the hall,
Were gone, she had taken them all;
She took all his rings and the rest of his things;
The picture he missed from the wall.

“What! moving!” the janitor said,
“Your rent is paid three months a-head”
“What good is the flat?” said poor Louis “Read that.”
And the janitor smiled as he read.

Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don’t tell me the lights are shining
any place but there.
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie,
If you meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

The janitor continued to read,
“Oh Louis please come, won’t you please?
They’ve got ice cream cones here, & a ferris wheel dear,
And a palace of electricity.

Forty-three of the forty-five states
Exhibit here as of this date.
And the countries have come, sixty-two the last sum!
Nothing else in this world is so great.

Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don’t tell me the lights are shining
any place but there.
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie  wootsie,
If you meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

So Louis decided to go
He missed his sweet beau Flo.
He took the next train, he was going insane
For the train it was moving too slow.

So he jumped off the train and he ran
He didn’t have much of a plan
But he loved Flossie dear, he just had to be near
at the greatest achievement of man.

Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don’t tell me the lights are shining
any place but there.
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie,
If you meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

"Louis" in the song is pronounced "LOO-ee", akin to the French. The song is one of the few instances of pronouncing the city's name that way. It is normally pronounced "LOO-is".

Did Judy Garland sing in Meet Me in St Louis?

If you've watched the classic 1944 musical “Meet Me in St. Louis,” you know it's hard not to get misty at the poignant sequence in which Judy Garland sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” while her kid sister, played by Margaret O'Brien, silently cries.

How old was Julie Garland in Meet Me in St Louis?

Garland, under contract at MGM, was initially opposed to starring in this sentimental family tale. The part required her to portray a teenager, and, at age 21, she longed to be rid of the juvenile roles in which she had traditionally been cast.
