2004 Chevy Trailblazer 4.2L check engine light. How to replace cam and crankshaft position sensors?

Answer:
The cam actuator solenoid is located on the passenger side front of the engine, These are common to fail and cause a check engine light code P0014 or P0016. When they fail, it causes a correlation code between it and the crank sensor. To remove the cam actuator solenoid, you will have to remove the drive belt and the either remove the power steering pump, or at least loosen it enough to slide it out of the way far enough for the cam sensor to clear the steering pump cap.

The crank position sensor is located on the drivers side of the engine, along with a few either sensors. You can either jack up the truck and take the drivers side wheel off to access the sensor. It is actually easier to get to it from under the truck. It is just bolted on with one 10mm bolt.

Then it is just a 10mm bolt that holds it in. Wiggle it and slide it out, then install the new one. After these repair, a "Cam / Crank correlation relearn" will need to be done. A high quality scan tool will be needed to do this properly. Some people have other ways to do it like letting it idle for a few minutes, or driving on the highway for 10 miles, but none of these work.

If you do not do that relearn, the engine light will come on and you will have codes. This could look like the parts did not fix the problem, when they actually did.

Question:
2006 Chvy Trailblazer. I am getting a troublecode of p0017. This says a camshaft/crankshaft bank 1 sensor B. both sensors were replaced. How do i correct this problem?

Answer:
A couple of possibilities for code p0017. You may have had a bad sensor and after replacing it did fix the problem, but you need to do what's called a camshaft / crankshaft position sensor correlation relearn procedure. This must be done with the dealer scan tool.

Another possibility is that the sensors were not bad, and the problem is with the camshaft actuator solenoid. This is on the front of the motor and controls advance and retard of the camshaft. This will also cause your issues. Usually the solenoid itself goes bad and it just needs to be replaced. A much worse condition is that the actuator inside the motor has failed and needs to be replaced. This is a very big job. The actuator is driven by the timing chain.

Question:
2003 Chevy Trail Blazer. 4.2L service 4 wheel drive codes = p0428.
Changed fan blower resistor and fan, ignition switch, key tumbler.vThe key is stuck in the ignition. The gear selector button will not depress, unless I unhook the wire from the under the hood fuse block that controls the windows, door locks temp control module. When I unhook the wire that controls these components, the actuator for the gear selector works when I hit the brake pedal and the key can be removed from the ignition. Any suggestions?

Answer:
Not sure what you mean by unhooking the wire at the fuse box? Do you mean you have the fuse box out and are now removing wires? That's a bad idea as it will cause more problems and confusion during diagnosis.

Did you get a scanner on it and look at the PRNDL signal? Did you test the release solenoid in the shift console? Sounds like you have a short circuit. You are going to need to follow several schematics testing for open and shorts.

Where is the crankshaft positioning sensor located on a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer?

Your crank sensor is located on the left (drivers) side of the engine block towards the rear. You may need to crawl under to get to it.

What are the symptoms of a faulty camshaft sensor?

A glowing check engine light, stalling, poor acceleration and bad fuel mileage are all possible signs your camshaft position sensor may be failing. Gone are the days of carburetors and distributors, replaced by a variety of sensors that help a car's computer get the maximum performance out of the engine.

Where is my camshaft position sensor located?

The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head. The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.
